How many people play warlight?: 12/26/2015 01:28:55

Scraped data from the 6,892 players that were visible (i.e., in a clan or having participated in a ladder) as of five days ago. Some quirks and flaws (newest batch of players clearly doesn't have much representation) but this is what I got by taking their true IDs and join dates.

Some weird spikes, too. I took the highest true ID value for each day and set it as the day's corresponding value. Not sure what's going on or whether it's on my end or WarLight's.

Also, looks like the October 2011 climb is visible here as well. Looks like it happened around 10/10/2011.

Would underestimate player growth in the recent past and overestimate growth in the far past because people don't join clans immediately.

Wait, is 'join date' the date they joined the *clan*, or the date they joined *Warlight*?

If the latter, which is what I was thinking, then no it would not overestimate. It's an XY plot, and it's monotonic (in theory*), so each point stands on its own. You know their exact Warlight join date and their user ID. You just plot them out.

If the former, then I don't get the point of tracking that.

[* Based on your last comment/chart, looks like either the theory is broke, or somehow the data got messed up.]

The join date is WL, join date.

And yes it is a XY plot. However ID's do not always correspond to join date. (FOr example Players that were invited, by email. Once the invite was sent their playerID was assigned to that email, but there Join date does not occur before they actually joined WL.)

Basically, a lot* of the accounts only exist in the system.

*that is an unknow X players that don't exist.

The invite thing would explain points where the ID is low and join date is high (downward spikes). Any ideas on what could be causing upward spikes, where people 'join early' but get a 'high ID'?

[Edit: One theoretical possibility just popped into mind. Are there any cases where people had old accounts but for whatever reason were given new accounts and the old 'join date' is imported into the new account? Like if someone lost their password, asked Fizzer to give them a new account, or something along those lines?]

Yes, I see how that could certainly give an inflated estimate of number of players, if merely *inviting* someone automatically creates a user ID. If people were to invite 10 friends on average who never join (just for the sake of argument), then the IDs would be about 10 times inflated.

Still, we might be able to still glean some *relative* growth trends from it, even if *absolute* ID numbers are tainted.

From 139 samples (myself, top 50 creators of the top 50 maps and M'Hunters), here's how fast WarLight has been growing:

DanWL- might wanna reverse the axes since your graph looks inverted/misleading right now.

I tried to but Excel wasn't plotting the data. I pressed the switch row/column. That lead to nothing.
This is what I mean:

I'll try re-selecting the data.

Thanks. I was going to do a more permanent fix. The permanent fix would slow progress down by 3-5 mins per account, with one-off delay of 414-690 mins.

Edit: The permanent fix would slow progress down by 3-5 mins altogether. The Idea of using Notepad was so obvious that I forgot to include that as a way round it.
-Done that fixing

Edit#2: All my dates have somehow disappeared. I'll correct that later. It's 01:50 where I am...

Here's a graph of 137 different playerIDs (some were unintentionally duplicated, so I removed them):

Dates will be added later.

This is super cool!

Now.... I just thought that GameID's also go up by one for each new game right. And Games also have a game crated date in the settings. SO, we could map the growth of number of games created and see if how it comperes to the PlayerID v. Date Joined.

The lowest game URL was https://www.warlight.net/MultiPlayer?GameID=1000000 (7 digits).

Looks like I'll have to make another massive layout change. I'm glad I'm making it as .xlsm. I just need to update the "Fix Styling" macro.

Edit: wording.

^ It appears that GameIDs aren't in order, just like playerIDs.

What do you mean? that other game was a month before the one Fleece posted.

Those graphs are cool. I'd love to see the Oldest player IDs on warlight, but filtered to just people who are still pretty active. Not sure definition of active though. Maybe 30,000 points in last 30 days?

Player IDs won't work. Maybe they get recycled if an account gets deleted? Look at the oldest accounts from WG

It was 20 to 1 in the morning. I wasn't concentrating.

Btw, the oldest playerID that I've found is Troll's, even though Troll joined later.

As someone quoted, fizzer said there are "Hundreds of thousands of players" on this game.
I still call bull on that... Accounts, sure! Players? Heh yeah alright.

Fizzer, please start giving the answers people ask for! xD

So far, there are about 575000 accounts*; this is in all-time. Unsure about players.

*=subject to change. Newest account I've found is 12/25/15 (UK date).
