As Jon Stewart once said, define cruel and unusual. Death by mind-blowing sex is unusual, but is it cruel? Death by car accident is cruel, but is it unusual?

Cruel and unusual is subjective, and subject to interpretation.

In England today death would be considered both unusual and cruel, whilst less than a hundred years ago it was considered completely normal and fair.

8th Amendment to the US Constitution:

"Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."

No, you should not castrate rapists.

Tests were once done in the Netherlands, when rapists were castrated, and there were generally 3 groups of people.

1. People who simply stopped (the group of people, under his belief, everybody should fall under)

2. People who sexually abused people in other ways

3. People who violently beat others as a replacement for rape

What was concluded, was that people don't rape for the sex. They do it for a feeling of empowerment, and the fact that they want to be in control of something, or someone, and feel the need to abuse them in horrible ways. If you castrate them, they will simply find alternatives to rape.

Therefore, castrating is not the option. I'd rather the choice for optional castration, but if the person is psychologically damaged, then a life sentence.

No, female rapists *generally* are statutory rapists.

Castration in what sense? Penis removal or testicle removal? Castration usually refers to the latter. (Removing testicles reduces sex drive and male hormones, thus less incentive to rape). Your discussion implies the former, though.
