Fallout 4 was not at all a bad game. It wasn't a superb game, Witcher III was a far superior game, in the same genre. But Fallout 4 is not a bad game. I think it's roughly on par with Fallout 3. I consider both to pale in comparison to New Vegas however, and for New Vegas to be relatively equal in terms of quality to Fallout/Fallout 2, just "different". New Vegas at least holds true to the aesthetics of the earlier games, it's just mechanically different, but it's still far more a "real" Fallout game than 3 or 4 are in my eyes. 3 and 4 are still good games, I'm just not sure I'd call them good "Fallout Games".

As a Bethesda softwares game, I expected more to their genre. Skyrim improved heavily on the AI scripting and made characters that felt believable, if not unpredictable. Fallout 4 didn't really add anything to further their style of games. Sure there was the settlements, which I actually liked, but that sometimes felt like a chore. Being able to actually use the junk littered around is nice, but devalues them in terms of world building. Instead of sifting through junk to uncover secrets in that area, I was a vacuum taking everything I could see.

Maybe I'm just bored of their style now (I did platinum Skyrim on ps3). There's also some world design aspects of fallout games that I think hinder them, but that's neither here nor there.
