Actually, women's rights groups were some of the first to draw attention to the treatment of women in the Middle East. I'm old enough to remember the Clinton and GW Bush administrations. Prominent human rights and women's rights groups have been on this for decades urging the government to act. They were some of the first to say that we should watch out for these people but no one wanted to risk upsetting our country's oil buddies. Maybe if they had paid attention we could have stopped these terrorist states before they got so big and powerful but it didn't pay to give a shit about women's rights then. Now it serves only as an emotional plea to accomplish other goals. A means to an end. Nothing more.
