Pfff how dare you compare Reagan to Trump, or even Obama? Political convictions aside, I have all the respect in the world for Reagan.

He sure had very flawed policies, but nothing as bad as Clinton and Bush II put forward after him. He had class, humour, was a truly great negotiator and a diplomacy hawk. It is in no small part to him that the Cold War ended, the Berlin wall falled and that Europe emerged to become what it is today.

And he managed to do a lot without congress on his side, Obama couldn't even pass bills for the last 6 years, and Trump can't even pass things with a republican congress. Reagan didn't even have the House for his entire presidency!

aw yeah baby give me that army and high taxes and escalating the cold war and leading to international bloodshed. oh and furthering the war on drugs. or do you like that he made it harder to immigrate?

Which was your favorite part? The invasion of Lebanon of which Oosama Laden said "And as I looked at those demolished towers in Lebanon, it entered my mind that we should punish the oppressor in kind and that we should destroy towers in America in order that they taste some of what we tasted and so that they be deterred from killing our women and children."? Or the shooting down of civilians in the Iran war?

and let's not forget that he had precisely 0 part in ending the Cold War.

Reagan lowered taxes. The result was a large national debt. That is the only thing I hold against him.

Even if you don't agree with his social politics, you are delusion if you refuse the Reagan economy. When he took office the country was suffering from oil shocks, unemployment, and inflation. (Normally, as inflation rises so does employment but in the 70s we were hit with stagflation which was a combination of unemployment and inflation.)

After he left office, America was richer than it had every been. The tax code was radically simplified by ripping out most of the corporate loopholes placed there by Nixon, Carter, and Johnson who were some of America's worst presidents.

Reagan as a matter of fact lowered taxes, like The Cruelest, I think that's probably one of Reagan's biggest mistakes. However, Clinton with his Market Deregulations and Bush II's poor economic policies did far worse than Reagan to the economy.

Reagan's military spike was a raise from arround 4.5% of GDP expenditure to arround 6% of GDP (average during his presidency). The USSR's in comparison was at arround 15%, so it's not like it was a crazy thing to do, and again the 9/11 expenditure spikes were far greater in total expenditure (equal in %) than Reagan's.

The war on drugs was a Nixon era failed policy, Reagan just continued it. It was a stupid idea, but at the moment, the general consensus was that it was the only solution to drug problems, it's easier to criticize now that we have the full data, and again, Clinton did more to harm people when it comes to drug policy than Reagan himself.

The Reagan interventions + Iran scandals weren't great either, but when you see what the next presidents did in that field, Reagan was almost like a non-interventionist lol...

When Gorbatchov come to power, Reagan shifted his Cold War policy and managed to make some of the most successful arms agreements in history.

Wikipedia:

"Reagan recognized the change in the direction of the Soviet leadership with Mikhail Gorbachev, and shifted to diplomacy, with a view to encourage the Soviet leader to pursue substantial arms agreements. Reagan's personal mission was to achieve "a world free of nuclear weapons," which he regarded as "totally irrational, totally inhumane, good for nothing but killing, possibly destructive of life on earth and civilization.""

http://money.cnn.com/2010/09/08/news/economy/reagan_years_taxes/index.htm

he may have done some false rhetor like all leaders but it takes more than some damn rhetor to make someone good.

Also from Wikipedia:

Other tax increases passed by Congress and signed by Reagan ensured however that tax revenues over his two terms were 18.2% of GDP as compared to 18.1% over the 40-year period of 1970–2010.[146] Then, in 1982 the Job Training Partnership Act of 1982 was signed into law, initiating one of the United States' first public–private partnerships and a major part of the president's job creation program. Reagan's Assistant Secretary of Labor and Chief of Staff, Al Angrisani, was a primary architect of the bill.

Conversely, Congress passed and Reagan signed into law tax increases of some nature in every year from 1981 to 1987 to continue funding such government programs as Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982 (TEFRA), Social Security, and the Deficit Reduction Act of 1984 (DEFRA)...

Reagan is viewed as an antitax hero despite raising taxes eleven times over the course of his presidency, all in the name of fiscal responsibility.

Reagan's military spike was a raise from arround 4.5% of GDP expenditure to arround 6% of GDP (average during his presidency).

spending on military is never really known, since there's always secrets going about.

Reagan's military spike was a raise from arround 4.5% of GDP expenditure to arround 6% of GDP (average during his presidency).

The true full numbers likely won't be known for a while (according to Soviet it was something like 2% went to their own military if you want to play by what states say about themselves)

the 9/11 expenditure spikes were far greater in total expenditure (equal in %) than Reagan's.

shit does not justify smaller shit.

but let's see.

Raegan sent or kept troops to:

Thailand (1981-1983)
Lebanon (1982-1984)
Grenada (1983)
Libya (1986)
Iran (1987-1988)

the next 8 years (Bush and Clinton):

Panama (1989-1990)
Iraq (1990-1991)
Somalia (1992-1995)
Haïti (1994-1995)
Bosna (1995)

as for Raegan being for some "diplomacy" let's not forget that he turned down Gorbachyov's offer to outright ban and destroy all ballistic missiles in 1986.

Better comparison to Reagan on militarism is Jimmy Carter. Not a single bullet was fired under him.
