|> Whether or not the points I'm making are valid, Mr. Sharpe, matters little. The point is that I look like I know what I'm talking about. For the most part I do, but this is mostly a toddler piloting a fighter jet.

Which brings me to the reason why I corrected you; someone who seems to know what he's talking about but doesn't can be very dangerous. If it's obvious someone is spouting nonsense, nobody will pay attention (or, more to the point, nobody will use the provided "advice").
If, however, you *seem* to be knowledgeable, someone might take your advice and find out the hard way you're wrong. Sure, in this case it's not particularly likely to cause mayor issues, but I'd still hate to have someone lose points on an exam because he remembered your "trig lessons".
However, when you get to other fields (such as cryptography), incorrect assertions, stated full of confidence but utterly wrong (such as claiming a particular encryption system is "unbreakable") can, in the worst case scenario (dissidents in a country with little respect for human life for instance), get people killed...
So no, I cannot possibly agree with your statement that being incompetent-yet-selfconfident "matters little".

Luckily this is math, where men are men, women are women, and if you try to divide either one of them by zero your calculator goes ape shit.

Correcting someone that simply wishes to argue (*ME*) is a lot like fishing for sharks in a puddle. You get funny looks and you'll be very surprised if your efforts come to fruition.

you making analogies is a lot like a guy who tries to do a thing. if the guy could do the thing, it would make him seem clever, but he fails miserably in his attempts to do the thing, and winds up looking stupider than if he hadnt bothered in the first place.

(analogy hint: the guy is you)
