you should allow more than one person to represent a country, I agree its individual. You cannot have one sole person represent america b/c who would you pick?

There's a slight problem with representing nations and having a fixed number of contestants from each nation. A while ago I was a volunteer at a big international event. We had a team from Slovenia, one from Croatia, one from Serbia, one from Bosnia Herzegovina and one from Macedonia. You don't see the problem? There was also one team representing the entire United States. Of course, had this been organised 25 years ago, those participants would have had to fight for a place on a single Yugoslavian team (while the USA would have had the same amount of participants).

I'm perfectly okay with people representing countries of course, but having a fixed number of participants (which, in some cases, might even be higher than the total number of WL players in that country) just doesn't work. If we were to hold a marathon, we could say people have to qualify for the finals by showing they can run a marathon in x hours. You might additionally limit the number of participants from each country, but with such a qualification process you would prevent someone who can't beat level 1 from making it to the tournament simply on account of him having found the button which says "forum" (and being the only person in Liechtenstein, the Seychelles, Christmas Island or Belize who happens to play WarLight). Unfortunately, unlike for a marathon, I don't really know of a good way for people to proof a certain proficiency on WL (it has to be objective, non-fakeable and accurate...). If anyone has any ideas, please share!

Note: Not all those examples of tiny countries with "just one WL player" are equally brilliant; they are simply the smallest countries I could think of. No disrespect (or prejudice against local technological development) intended!

Good point, RvW. The problem is finding out what is a consistent judge on who makes it. I think the single player challenges are about the only way to do it unless someone else has a good idea. If we do the single player challenges, what Level should it be that they have to beat?

i think you could have a commitee of about 10 players judging players skill level, like happened in the manager league. The unknown players have to be judged by a stat based formula unfortunately.

You can have this first event with half of the intended number of players in each tournament (32 instaed of 64 for example). And you could have regionals for the next olympics.

I think you must do double elimination because it becomes clear 1st 2nd and 3rd place. Or with less fairness you can do it single elimination with a game for 3rd place.

I think you have to limit a Nations squad size possibility to about 15% or 20% of total spots (6 or 7 USA players in 32 competeing for example).

And, I will represent Brazil

The tournaments will definitely be double elimination i think but the trials are going to be the tough part.

I like your idea of having judges but i was thinking of making it more like the actual Olympic trials. I was thinking that we should randomly divide them into groups of 30 for the trials. In each group there will be 3 semifinals like the real trials and the top 3 from each group advance plus one wildcard. The finals would be another 10 player round robin and the top 4 players in it would advance to the Olympics. If we had 8 groups(240 players) that would be a 32 person double elimination tournament. And we would do this for each of the 10 maps and you could join whichever ones you wanted to.

The people who actually qualify for the Olympics would need to put their country on their tagline so everyone can see which country they are representing.

So we're going to need 10 maps for it...My plan is to include each part of the world where people that play warlight are living in. So here's my basic ideas for maps:

Maps that will definitely be in it:
Medium Earth-
East Asia & Oceania-
Europe-
Medium USA-

Other regions I'd like to have maps of:
Russia- One map but it appears unbalanced to me
Canada- Unbalanced map and too big
Africa- Map is too big
South America & Carribbean- Map is too big
I was thinking that maybe if there were smaller versions of these maps with around 100 territories we could use them...i might have time to make a couple of them.

Other possible maps:
China: Warring States-
Small Earth-
Huruey's Castle-
Imperium Romanum-

If you have any ideas for the maps or templates please contact me. Also, if anyone would be interested in making smaller versions of those maps please contact me.

Ok, I've picked out the maps and I will wait on the settings for right now. The maps are:
For 1v1:
Ancient China
Medium Earth
East Asia & Oceania
Europe
Medium USA
Small Earth
Canada
Russia
Huruey's Castle
Imperium Romanum
For 2v2:
East Asia & Oceania
Imperium Romanum
Medium Earth
For 3v3:
Middle East
Europe
For 4v4:
Africa
South America and The Caribbean

Also, how should I do the Olympic Trials?
My thoughts for 1v1 was one of two options:
Option 1:
8 groups of 30
Divide each group into 3 round robins (10 people in each)
The top 3 from each round robin advance to the finals for the group plus one wildcard
In the group finals, the top 4 will advance to the Olympics.
240 people in trials, 32 advance

Option 2:
16 groups of 20
Top 4 in each group advance
320 people in trials, 64 advance

For the 2v2 and 3v3 and 4v4 I will use dunga's earlier mentioned idea and have judges determine which teams make it and which don't.

If you have a team for any map, please post on this thread. Also, please vote on which option you think we should do for 1v1.

I'd say for US you'd have to do one from each state or something given the number of people playing here.

Maybe do US champ versus world champ or something. Or match a US person against a world person in each first round matchup (you'd need 50 other countries represented then).
