I'm not sure how that would come about, especially since the US is so anti-communist during that time period.

When the earth is split between the two massive communist powers, they end up fighting.
I think there would be more of a Chinese-Soviet "leave us alone" policy. If they did fight, it's whoever has the most nukes, best total war defence programme and lowesst population density...No matter how many "leftover" capitalist resources it has.
