How about this:

Have you ever heard of Tecumseh's Curse on the US? In the battle at Tippecanoe, William Henry Harrison defeated Tecumseh's Native American tribe. Tecumseh's brother, the shaman of the tribe, put a curse on Harrison and the US. We now see a pattern. Every President elected for a term in office in a year that ends with a zero (1820, for example) has died within that term. The only two exceptions are Ronald Reagan (1980) and George W. Bush (2000). Some say the curse has lifted when Reagan vetoed a certain event that would ruin Native American land. But what if a president were to do something bad for the Native Americans? Would it come back?

There are many ways to play around with this apparent curse put on the US.

The main character is introduced after a traumatic event in the past. This event will later come back in sequels. The main character may also face said hardship in the first few chapters. The readers are introduced to a wise man, who trains the character to become a far greater fighter, so he can combat a great evil mentioned earlier in the same "meeting the wise guy" section, or the guy who caused the main character the injury in the first place. During this training phase, he also meets a girl who he falls in love with him. The bad guy kidnaps the girl and knocks out the hero, and mortally wounds the trainer, who also trained the bad guy many years earlier. On his deathbed, the old guy tells the hero where he can go to get more power to beat the bad guy, but he's gotta complete three challenges. After completing them, he assaults the bad guy's fortress. After being captured, he is taken to the bad guy's throne room and is about to be killed, but the bad guy tells him how to kill him, and he kills him after grabbing the girl. They escape, have sex and the novel ends after talking about how lucky they were to win.

(works for almost anything, and parts of this are in nearly every novel. In teen and above, the girl and hero surviving is optional, although at least one of them should survive.
