In response to a few select people who posted in the last page of this thread: If there's one type of liberal that I hate it's the ones who dedicate themselves to fighting "Teh evul consurvatives". Not everything from the right is bad, and not everything from the left is bad.

I hate when people put up an arrogant attitude and act as if everyone from the other side of the political spectrum is a "nutjob".

I call a spade a spade and a nutjob a nutjob. Right or left doesn't matter. But, statistically speaking, there are in fact more nutjobs on the right. Mix religion into anything and you get a lot of nutjobs. The right's been dipping into that ol' timey religion with gusto for decades and it shows.

Can I just distance myself from the European guy who complained about rare steak? I'd also like to point out that the French eat 'Blu' steak which is fried for two or three seconds on each side and drips blood.

It was a long argument so I forget who said that both sides have nutjobs, but in response; yes, both sides do. Richard Dawkins being a prime example of an insufferable prick who considers himself a liberal (but that social darwinism crap that he shouts sometimes would put him tot eh right of Hitler).

Its not that people who believe in things that I don't believe in are nut jobs. Religion is probably the best example, its when people decide that they can decide laws for other people based entirely on their faith; gay marriage, teaching creationism etc., that pisses me off.

The Jesus of the bible was an anti-establishment, free health care giving, critic of the rich, taxman defending, opponent of the death penalty. Why are the right against all of those things but in favour of imposing laws based off one or two lines in the O.T. that impinge on the freedoms of others?

That is why I call them nutcases. This is in no way endemic to Christianity, all religions have fundamentalists that do this.

To whoever it was that said that the US lost Vietnam because they didn't invade it enough; are you serious? The US could not have won that war unless they had nuked the country into the sea! The Vietnamese had already repulsed the Japanese and the French (twice) before teh US jumped in, it was always going to go wrong because conventional armies cannot beat Guerrilla warfare without the support of the local people.

No one has ever done it. Spain beat Napoleon, coining the name Guerrilla, Ireland beat the Brits, Afghanistan beat the USSR - and the US didn't exactly win their war there either. Throwing more men into a dense, burning, jungle to walk over mines and shoot civilians (accidently or otherwise) would have only killed more American and angered the Vietnamese further.

Considering many wars since WW2 have been capitalist/communist dick measuring contests...

I think it would have been possible to win Vietnam if they had really tried. Dropping 2,000 ton conventional explosives could have leveled Hanoi. Of course, this is a terrible idea.

America dropped more bombs over Vietnam than they dropped in all of world war 2. Leveling Hanoi would achieve very little, it might oust the government but that isn't even the first step in winning a war, as demonstrated by Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Vietnam is unbeatable without public support from the locals, dropping more bombs kills more civilians which pisses off more people who then support the Vietcong...and the circle repeats.

Golden Age of Europe? I assume you mean Europe west of USSR, well, Europe does not matter as much as it did, but this is nothing new - Europe's politic status has roughly kept the same since the 1950s or 60s. Roma is not where Europe's heart is, Berlin is. European civilisation didn't begin in Roma, either, it began in Kriti. The EU's actions are going to matter, how much tolerance they can bear from American restrictive global policies before removing suzerainty. And not as a whole, Germany, Britain, France, Italy and Turkey would be foolishly listed as "countries that don't matter". Until further notice (hundredcounts from now, perhaps), polities are going to be ruled by few. Not by many.

They dropped 7 million tonnes of bombs during the Vietnam war (including many in Laos and Cambodia along the Ho Chi Minh trial).

The length of the war does not explain this amount of bombing. The Vietnam war occurred over an area a fraction of the size of that involved in WW2 and resulted in much fewer casualties (still huge though).

America went all out against Vietnam, they lost because the Vietcong knew the land, the people and were far more determined.

Would be nice to have statistics on this, and the length does explain it fully.

2.5 m tonnes over 3.5 years, roughly 0.7 tonnes per year (while being helped by several other powerful countries).

7 m tonnes over 19.5 years, that's roughly 0.4 tones per year (while receiving little help).

Just realised that irony said China is on the up when just recently their stock market crashed and could fall in the next 20 years. It will be the worse for America,Australia and Japan
