I was playing a 1v1 on the Small Earth map, and I lost pretty quickly, but when I went to the history I discovered something strange with our picks in comparison to what we had on turn one.

My picks:

His picks:

First turn:

We both had Eastern Australia as our first pick, which he got because he submitted his picks first.
He had Venezuela as his second pick, and I had Egypt as my second pick.
He had Central America as his third, and I had Venezuela as my third.

So how did I get Venezuela? The way I see it, he got Eastern Australia based on being first, and should get Venezuela because it went uncontested, leaving me with Egypt and Central America. Is this an rare and unusual occurrence or am I just a noob?

It's because of how the turn order works.

Your opponent got the first pick, so you get the next two picks, and then he gets his second pick only after that. The turn order is ABBAABBAA... or something similar.

I'm shaky on turn order, though, so if someone comes to correct me, listen to them instead.

You are a noob. Your opponent got first pick, then you got second and third pick, then back to your opponent.

Picks would look like: ABBAABBAABBA...

thus

Opponent first pick: Aussie
Your first available pick: Egypt
Your second available pick: Venez
Your opponent's second available pick: Central Am
