I was drawing a blank on what to make my next map on, so I made the following thread:

The rest is history

Cool! :D

I think it'll make for a really nice map, I've always found the shape of it really interesting, and you can make a lot of "land-grab" scenarios, or even concept History, where human tribes tried to colonise it before the Ice age :)

It should work well for 1v1 as well! Glad you liked the idea!

No problem, Fleecemaster! I thought it would provide for something different than a typical real-world map. It feels totally like its on this earth, but it feels wholly different as well. That is why I liked your idea so much.

Can you do an Australia at some point? I have no idea how to use inkscape.

Yeah, inkscape makes no sense :P. Personally, I think it is a cool map. I was actually expecting it to just be Antarctica. So many people would never realize that most of Antartica would be submerged if it melted.

I could try for Australia... I know a good map is lacking... but first is to complete this project.

I can easily make the background darker, so that will not be much of a problem.

Darker background would be a great improvement.

The borders are also kind of messy (they look rectangular-ish), but it's good enough so far.

Curious to how it turns out.

Zephyrum-

I used straight beizers for this map. It is a stylistic choice. The rectangular-ish look of the borders was intended for this map. Although, they could match up better.

Bonuses Done! Only thing left is the territory names. This will be challenging, especially since I wont be taking the NinjaNic Approach of labeling everything as "snow"

They are of course subject to change if they are found to be too strong or weak in areas after it is tested.

Wow, that's actually looking really nice! :D

Maybe there are scientific names for the regions of Antartica?

I really like how it looks btw, you've done an awesome job, love it!!!

And I appreciate the awesome job you've done with my suggestion! It almost brings a tear to my eye! I love how the land mass of Antarctica looks and always knew it would make a great map!

I think the bonus names are brilliant, I was trying to find a good way to name the territories but I can't, I was thinking research stations maybe, but they are mostly on the edge, and maybe wouldn't make sense on a post-melt Antarctica...

It's a tricky one, I don't have any good suggestions :/

There's a few mountains, and things like the south pole itself, maybe that's a start?

Indeed it is a start. I appreciate the idea. I am thinking about naming some of the territories after names of explorers of the region, and perhaps Ice sheets and nearby features. It was a little bit of a stretch for some of those bonuses, even! I think I will figure it out.

This map is easily my best map yet. The quality is even surprising to me when I look at it. I keep thinking to myself, "I made that???" Its difficult for me to believe.

In any case, I think the territory names will figure themselves out in time... although I will be actively searching for them throughout the process of naming. If anyone else has ideas, feel free to mention them!

Ironically, the south pole is underwater in the map, but I can place the name onto the nearest territory.

You may problems with that considering there aren't many features in Antarctica outside the occasional mountain.

I have a suggestion, name them after all the members of the exploring expeditions to the arctic, when you throw in the full crew, you would probably have more than enough names, and eliminate them based on importance to the mission at hand.

@japan77- That is what I was considering. It is probably my only option.

I mean, really thinking about it, the reason we don't have names is because of the antartic treaty, we're not allowed to settle there, it's research only and there are very strict rules about what you're even allowed to take there.

So after the melt there will be one of three things:

1. Antartica will remain 100% protected, and will become a haven for a lot of wildlife once the forests regrow, etc.

2. People will be allowed to settle there, once there is soil, trees, etc, maybe there will be new cities and farmlands.

3. Oil.

Or a combination of all three! So names could be related to thinking along those lines, also maybe take into account what the new regions geography and climate would be, forests, deserts, mountains, plains, etc... I did have a nice graphic about the predictions but I can't find it now!

You know, I think I might start a series of maps based off of the post-melt world. It would be a very interesting journey, and also open some eyes to some people about what would really happen if all of that ice did melt.

That's exactly what I was thinking when reading up on it just now aswell!

The Europe map is particularly interesting to me, UK is half under water, and many countries like the Netherlands will be gone completely, it'll be a scary new world indeed...
