The Martian Rants: Homework.: 2/22/2016 02:37:18

Every now and then you will get a day in school where you are swamped with homework from all of your teachers. If you are crazy and take 7 AP classes, then you deserve it. But if you're like me, taking classes I am expected to be taking, then you probably ask yourself, "What did I ever do to them? Do they plan this?" As I type this after doing all homework under the sun, the answer seems like an obvious "Yes."

Who in God's name makes you go through all countries in the world to find literacy rates, GDPs, Educations, and life expectancies to figure out everyone's GDI? Why not just make it easier on us and tell us to find the GDI? Seriously, man. Instead of just looking up the GDI of countries, I'm stuck wondering why Cameroon doesn't have an applicable literacy rate on the World Factbook and why I can't just slap a 4 on f*cking Niger. And then you have me coloring in a map to show the statistics of my findings. Why did I have to record a chart if I was going to put the same shit on a f*cking map!? Stupid Human Geography teacher...

And then my English teacher makes me try to understand whatever the hell Transcendentalism is. All I got from it was that a couple tree huggers back in the day were also stuck up and hypocrites, but that apparently doesn't get you full credit on assignments. Seriously, whoever this Thoreau guy is must have had an impressive house, because that's what he wrote about, and that's what I have to read. He builds a f*cking house using other people's tools and preaches about self-reliance. F*ck you, Thoreau. Get that plank out of your eye before getting the speck out of mine.

Do I know what coterminal arcs and radians are? Yes. Do I know how this information will in any way help me in my future? No. When will I ever have to look at something at my job and say, "That is a coterminal of 3.4 radians?" Calculus is said to be really important to learn, but honestly I'm looking for a job in the soft sciences so don't rob my sleep over this sh*t, thank you.

Homework is essential to help us retain what we learn in school, but when teachers gather in the boil room in their black cloaks, discussing with Satan when they should assign homework assignments consecutively to screw over students, it begins to be a bit much. So my message to teachers it this: You remember being a student, right? Then f*ck off with your useless information gathering and translating shit! I like my sleep. If you don't remember being a student, then you shouldn't be teaching. And if you are like my teachers, knowing what it's like being a student and still assigning a college level thesis with everyone else, then I'll be seeing you in Hell, then, won't I?

Stay edgy, and have a nice time, I'm going to (try going to) sleep.

"Day-o! Me say day-o! Daylight come and me wan' go home."

+1. Some homework seems so worthless.

:(

Transcendentalism gets such a bad rap. Its literally the American equivalence of Romanticism. You know...the artistic, intellectual, and literary movement that birthed European Nationalism in the 1800s. Its pretty important. But yeah...the other stuff I get.

^I don't disagree with all of it; in fact, the aspect of free thought and nonconformity are actually much needed, but the guys, Emerson, Thoreau etc. are so contradictory within their own works it's not even funny.

All poems are pretentious.

If you think something has more meaning just because it carries a title, you might be suffering from pretentiousitus.

Symptoms include finding deep meanings in quotes like "Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new." -Albert Einstein.

I actually think the future of education will be tailoring academic programs and courses to students based on 1) their interests, 2) their future job/career choice, and 3) democratic education considerations. #3 simply means that the public education system must recognize that basic education regarding the US government, the constitution, the rule of law, and the rights of citizens is a necessity in order to have a high-functioning democratic government. But otherwise...most fields are getting so narrow and focused that early education in a field is becoming more vital. As you say...if you're becoming a social scientist is the need to know Calc II evident? If you're becoming a specialist in nanotechnology, is knowledge on the effects of transcendentalism on secular thought vital? Probably not.

Calculus is said to be really important to learn, but honestly I'm looking for a job in the soft sciences so don't rob my sleep over this sh*t, thank you.

Even the soft sciences require learning statistics. To get a mathematical sense of the Normal/Gaussian distribution (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_distribution), learning basic calculus is a bit of a prerequisite. Using calculus *is*, after all, how Gauss figured it out in the first place.
Homework is essential to help us retain what we learn in school

That's highly debatable. What's essential is *practice*. Whether that practice happens in school or out of it is not so important. Also debatable is how much, on which topics, and how difficult it should be.

A lot of 'homework' some teachers give is more like make-work (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/make-work), which is of little value for learning/practice. Depends on the teacher, curriculum, and course material.

Welp, with one class right after the other, there is little time to practice in school. And homework is more or less a cushion for any tests that may be difficult.

It looks good on a resume. I don't need Calculus in order to explain why humans from different hearths have different cultures, or why the War of 1812 was so sad for both sides it was laughable.

That's one of the problems with today's school systems, IMO.

Would probably do better by moving to Finland and live out your education years there and become one with the people. Dont go to South Korea though...education is one of the leading factors to suicide.

Aren't coterminal arcs and radians part of trigonometry? Calculus is integration, derivation etc.

Radians is more used for circles since its the ratio of radius/circumference than trig. And you can use angles in calculus. Integrating in polar co-ordinate systems or maybe differentiating angular velocity. Literally never heard of these coterminal arc things.

Maths is great darth darth, forget the soft sciences, don't be weak!

It seems like a balance should be struck, especially at the College level. It's outrageous that in the U.S you have to pay thousands of dollars for higher education and yet many professors expect you to do 95% of the work despite the fact it is you paying them to teach.

If I wanted to teach myself I could do it for far less money. If I'm going to pay someone else to teach me I expect to be met halfway.
