DIVISION A: Week 1 Summary:

About one week of play has finished, and we already have some surprising results! And just like Clan League, we'll focus primarily on 1v1 for the first few weeks.



The first item to discuss today is the Strat ME 1v1 tournament which has finished most games.

Out of the starting gate Legends of Light (Master Turtle - Master Clan) and Random Players (KKND - Blitz) have stumbled. For Legends of Light (LoL), a clan favoured to win Division A, it is not a good omen. LoL will recover from this as their bench is deep but some may begin to doubt the team's ability to win the division. Merely placing (2nd-5th) in Division A is a pointless exercise. How each team recovers from Week 1 will be an interesting thread to follow.

Robot Unicorns (Kenny * apex - Apex), another team with high expectations to win Division A, faltered this week though ended up with a much better result then LoL. But the majority of completed games for Robot Unicorns have been in Strat ME where Verzhrer has had a middling (2-2) performance and easily could be an outlier when other players also start finishing games.

A clan currently punching higher then expected is Warsenal WC (Tjoex - CORP)). Kryzchu is the main player driving this team's (4-1) record; whether this week is an outlier or a part of trend for Warsenal will be interesting to watch as this teams lineup doesn't seem to contain quite so many heavyweights as other teams.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Spuds (hedja - REGL) has been dominant posting an impressive (6-1) record so far. This is mostly due to master of disaster winning 4 games so far but all 1v1 team members have posted at least one win.

And WTF (Platinum - 101st) are the last team I'll mention but there isn't much to report. With only 2 games finished they have been the slowest team so far. With such a small sample of games (yes, all teams have a small sample of games finished but WTF's is minute in comparison) little can be drawn from the competition so far.



The growth of each teams points and win rate will be tracked for both divisions. They are a little lackluster right now, but the more data I get the better they will become. It will be interesting to see a team like LoL climb out of a rough start. Will it be slow and steady towards the top or a dramatic rise, pushing down the currently leaders. One of many items to watch in future updates.

Great summary. Those time series graphs are pretty cool too. I just have one question about the league table though; is this table format considered normal in certain competitions?

It may just be me used to the football/soccer (and other sports) league table format, but since the winner is whoever accumulates the most points, should it not be sorted by 'Points'? I find a leaderboard sorted by 'Points', and then 'Win Rate', more conventional than this 'Maximum (potential) Points' sorting, with a column for 'Games Played' rather than 'Games Left' too.

I can sort of make sense of it as it is, but looking at the results so far, I would consider Spuds currently in the lead with the other clubs having the potential to catch them, as opposed to WTF in the lead with the potential to lose games and fall behind... I reworked the spreadsheet league table to better show the format that I'm used to and makes more sense (to me):

Sorting by maximum points kind of alters the concept. It's more a sense of dropping the least points as opposed to winning the most... if that makes sense.

If this is a normal thing though for most, I can't complain, but I think that many from Europe and Latin America would feel the same as I since theres a massive football following there. I actually thought all major sports leagues worldwide followed this format, and so it would make more sense to change it, wouldn't it?

Great, Great! I think it was you who did a Challonge forGroup A. Is it possible to have one for Group B before it starts (tomorrow) ?

@ Red Army, yes the table you put together is the more common format used in major league sports. I will be tweaking the spreadsheet to reflect a change from a manually changed record (W-L) column to the W and L columns you showed.

Two things that I'm not sure should be changed:

• Changing from ranking by max points.
  I think teams should be ranked my max points as it has to do with potential rather then current standings. For example, say a team has a (6-10) record and another team had a (5-1) record. If you rank by points first, the (6-10) record would be higher ranked despite their much lower potential. Even if you rank by points then win rate, win rate is only considered when points are tied which isn't very common later in the season. No ranking method is perfect and unless there is a ground swell desiring a change to the format, it will probably stay the way it is.
  
• Changing from games left to games played.
  I don't really care if its games left or games played. Game left, imo, is easier to see where things are going. Games played looks at where things are now and is doesn't convey information quite as simply. Again, if players want this to change it can.

@Mike, I'm not sure if you are talking to me or not. Or what exactly you are referring to....
I probably will at the very least change to ranking by max points, then win rate but I need to figure out how to do that. I'm not that familiar with using spreadsheets and it will take some trial and error to figure out.

Spuds' max points are wrong in the March 14th graphic though, should be 119.

We will sweep the 3v3 EU and 2v2 Pangea Ultima.... I am not concerned right now.

Your odds of sweeping those tournaments is virtually nil.

While I may not 100% agree with Turtle's statement of sweeping those two tournaments, I agree that Legends of Light are far from out of this. Legends of Light have only finished 5 games and 4 of the 5 are from one player SmileyLeg {TJC}. Their current performance is easily attributed to an underperforming player.

But lets say that Legends of Light sweeps those two tournaments. The only way Legends of Light benefits in the rankings is a mixed result for other teams in those two tournaments where they get 2 more wins then the second placed team. Otherwise getting 1 more win then another team in 3v3 or 2v2 while writing off a 1v1 tournament hardly seems like a winning strategy from a points perspective.
