Well, notice the "http://" or "https://" at the beginning of the URL in your browser? HTTP is actually a communication protocol (kind of like a special set of rules explaining how you can communicate with web services, primarily exchanging text) that uses multiple types of "requests"- GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, etc. (built on top of other, lower-level network protocols) This web page you're looking at right now is just an endpoint that your browser's requesting data from and then parsing to render what you see on your screen.

I use a library in a programming language called Python to make these HTTP "GET" requests to Warlight URLs, and they end up giving me essentially what you see when you click "view source" on those pages. I can extract and play around with whatever stuff is exposed on there and use it to make some calculations.

Luckily for us, everyone's rank/rating history is exposed on their ladder team pages.

So it looks like my algorithm is broken because it misses situations where people left the ladder and then came back ranked #1 (so it missed szewenigen's comeback on the Real Time ladder right before Gnuffone took it back on 8/26/14).

I'll fix that and touch the 2v2/3v3 stuff after finals.

You seem to start too late for the 1v1 ladder (but that's probably because there are no earlier stats). The 1v1 ladder started in February 2011 (easy to remember: it's a few days before I bought membership because I bought membership to join the ladder).

Most of the first few weeks / months, Doushibag was first. ( https://www.warlight.net/Profile?p=27464222 (you can see he was first), https://www.warlight.net/LadderTeam?LadderTeamID=146 (stats only available from April 30 onwards when he wasn't ranked anymore.)) He was a massive staller though. The Impaller's first run was actually longer than 73 days, as shown here though, he took first (long?) before April 30. So I'm pretty sure The Impaller had the longest streak.

Interesting data kynte, similar to when either you or smileyleg did it before.

There are lots of repeated names since its like a timeline, so would it be possible to just have a list for each ladder of who has achieved number 1 and held it long enough to get the trophy?

Nice work! However, variation in play speed of each run essentially invalidates run duration as a ranking metric.

Consider a run by a #1 that takes 2.99 days per turn and only plays in 1 game at a time. Compare that with a run by another #1 that plays fast and 5 at a time.

Fortunately, numberOfGamesCompletedAtNumberOne is independent of intentional stalling and play speed variation. That's the metric we need.

Or titleDefenses if you prefer a shorter name:)

If you want to get title defenses, you have to estimate when someone's reign at #1 came to an end and then capture the # of games between that timeframe. Would scale the # of queries and slow down the script.

I just got done with the year, though, so I'll see if I can add stuff like that in during my kinda-sorta-not-really-free time over the next couple weeks.

FYI there may be some errors in the data related to handling of unicode characters in player names.

ah i remember. His rating wasnt higher than mine, i just left ladder for one day. I didnt know that would keep me from having the longest #1 of all time ;) still 13 days looks wrong to me.

Hmm, looks like Knyte's list doesn't have the fact that you rejoined to take #1 again in it, so it looks like QB was first 71 days in a row. According to his ladder profile, this clearly wasn't the case, since it says he was first for 2 days.

Yep, that's the bug where it doesn't catch ladder returns, documented on post 25 in this thread.
