1. this is an insane diplo game.. look at history and chat. people go at eachother like crazy
-file:///home/chronos/u-4c92afdd4cd566a91d7696191d2d9cad17cdee04/Downloads/warlight.html

2. unless you have 5 hours to kill, dont do a real time diplomacy

3. diplomacy games make it realistic, alliances, betrayal, war, it has it all, plus role playing. When i found diplo games I couldn't stop. they are very fun.

4. If that link doesnt work sorry my school blocked Warlight so on unblocked sight

I seem to be a minority opinion, but I think that "diplomacy"-style games are absolutely fascinating strategically and a great test of your skills. However, I also find that the way most people play "diplos" on Warlight is extremely boring - often nothing happens for 10 or 20 turns at a time, the game eventually staggers forward simply because someone got booted, and when things do happen they devolve into arguments over the rules.

There are ways to avoid these problems, however. It's just a design issue, and there are lots of settings which can be used to create fun and engaging "diplomacy"-style play.

I'm not really a diplomacy player on Warlight (because of the issues mentioned above), but I would recommend to look for games with a group of players who know each other and/or have played before and a game WITHOUT ALLIANCE/DECLARATION rules. Those are more likely to be interesting.

(How would you do a "better" diplo? I posted some thoughts before towards the end of this thread:

(Eh. You can improve your odds a lot by having a more reasonable set of rules - then just about any game can be fun, for the same reasons non-diplo games are fun.)

Oh Poireau, finally someone with the same opinion of diplos!

One of my best diplos so far, I am perfecting the scenario to this day:

Good diplos are always an strategy game of their own kind.

The perfect diplo has:

1) short, but gapless rules

2) reliable players

3) any system that gives the players "ambitions"

As soon as everyone fights for his own ambitions, the game works. Think about it.

Precisely.

I played in a Game of Thrones diplomacy game once. It was quite enjoyable in a lot of ways, as it turned out (largely due to not having to worry about "declaration" rules).

However, at the start of the game they explained that so-and-so was King and we were all his vassals. We were all expected to swear fealty and then to discuss the state of affairs and who might be chosen for Master of Coin (a meaningless title with no actual powers). Finally, some people got tired of it or got booted and some things started to happen.

Where is the fun in that?

Were I to make that, no way would that fly. No, set the game at the end of the first season/book.

Like so:

* The King has just been killed, and Ned Stark has been beheaded by the "new" King (Joffrey).

* The King's two brothers both have a claim to the throne (Renly and Stannis).

* The Northern King wants revenge (Robb Stark), and has a large army behind him willing to put him on the throne.

* The Iron Islanders are at war with the North.

* In the East, Daenerys is raising an army and many back her for the throne as well.

* Meanwhile, the White Walkers are coming, adding pressure to the whole situation. (Ideally an AI with incredible numbers of armies.)

Now THAT would be an interesting diplomacy.

Give people motives and things to fight over - that's what diplomacy is all about.
