Sofa commandership is not the way to go.

That seems to be a popular quote in russia, for whatever reason =p

Violence only begets more violence.

Ok knyte, gandhi blood aside, as true as it is, letting ISIS be violent without responding is generating violence over time. A quick response with minimized damage (since these invasions are far more responsible than the free syria army or the syrian government) is the way to avoid it.

Cordon them off if need be, but killing mostly draftees is not the way to go.

Knyte, you wanted to overthrow a government for not being a American puppet, in what would be a very long and bloody war, and could spiral into a total world war.

I want to end a conflict quickly, with a way out for the opposing forces that doesn't push them into a corner, kills fewer civilians than the alternative, and ends that possibility of world war.

I was joking, Smedley. Because the last time I suggested we take economic action against Russia strictly to enforce international law, you suddenly started blaming me for every war everyone's ever thought of.

Was hoping you'd maybe realize how much of an idiot you are. But looking at your profile picture... well, looks like you're turning into the physical embodiment of Yahoo! chain e-mails and edgy reddit spam.

Oh wait I know why Knyte is trying to go after me on this! His favorite candidate supported ISIS and helped facilitate it's rise!

AQI (Al-Qaeda in Iraq) is identified as opposition to Assad's regime, AQI at the time had ISI(Islamic State of Iraq, later ISIS) as a part of it, the report noting that ISI's spokesman Muhammed Al-Adnani voiced the opposition of AQI and ISI to Assad's regime. The report also states that the West, Turkey, and the Gulf States support the opposition to Assad, which includes ISI. It even states that AQI might be able to return to Northern Iraq in the near future.

Hey Knyte, remember when I said that with non-interventionism Hitler's rise would have not been possible as the circumstances wouldn't have became what they were? Well guess what, this is the same thing, as without US support, AQI and ISI would have not been able to rise in Syria in the first place. Now please stop supporting the start of conflicts you won't have to get directly involved with and resolve.

You suggested that we take down Assad's government, because they were not following "your rules". I used that same logic with the Putin regime that doesn't follow your rules.

Clearly, Woodrow Wilson is to blame for the Holocaust.

Thanks for the insight, Smedley.

No, I didn't suggest anything. I voiced my support for Clinton, not all of her policies. You're the one who brought it up.

And yes, I support military action (if necessary) against any regime that illegally uses chemical weapons on its own citizens. Sue me.

Clearly, Woodrow Wilson is to blame for World War I.

When did I say Woodrow Wilson? I was talking about the governments across the pond who jumped right into the foreign affairs of other countries with guns and bombs.

Now, please adress Clinton's support of AQI as seen in that memo.

I should sue you, for the medical bills of all those killed in that horrid civil war.

So when presented with evidence that Clinton and the support of opposition to Assad opened the door for ISIS, you decide now is the time to retreat? Go to a foxhole in Syria, and don't come back.

Also, since you're for overthrowing a government when it uses chemical weapons, when are you going to march on Washington because of depleted uranium bombs and rounds?

That's rather naive of you. Assad might be at the head of a brutal regime, but right now he's one of the best weapons against ISIS. Sure, he might be bad, but the alternative is more beheadings and radicalism in the Middle East.

Fighting against Assad is not mutually exclusive with fighting against ISIS.

I agree that ISIS makes for extenuating circumstances now (although imho we'd accomplish more by backing the Kurdistan movement and letting Assad get ousted); I was referring to the situation back when Assad had just crossed the "red line" and we did nothing.

The alternative here is legitimizing the use of chemical weapons against civilians. We either enforce international law (ideally through proper channels) or all of it moves toward nonexistence.

Sue the US in the ICJ. Iraq was very clearly an illegal invasion.

Direct military action needs to be saved for the most severe circumstances. Afghanistan made sense; Iraq didn't.
