My opinion of the 10 players that currently or will represent each generation:

Old Guard: Heyheuhei, Qi, Lobstrosity, Unknownsoldier, Myhandisonfire, Szewenigen, Teddy, The Impaller, Zibik, Zaeban

The Experimental Generation: Timinator, JSA, Fridge, Luxis, Trolussa, Summer, Gnuffone, Falker, Dead piggy, Frankdeslimste

The Up and Coming: Dom, Mirror, Rento, Kryzchu, Gambler, Latnox, Hauptmann, Ultimaratio, Lord Syvedyas, Unreality

The Old Guard is obviously well set now, some might include players like TheLollipop Guild, Fatih, Salah, Bishes, etc, but most have never heard of those players anymore. 2 names have stayed big despite their inactivity: Zaeban and The Impaller. Others, depsite their lower level of play or very low level of activity recently, are still viewed as legends by many: Lobstrosity, Heyheuhei, Unkonwnsoldier, Zibik, Szeweningen. Qi and Myhand are viewed by most as 2 of the top 5 players in the game, some view them as the top 2. Teddy has dominated the 1v1 ladder recently and was a huge name when he left a while back.

The Experimental Generation includes 8 players that have taken #1 on a ladder, and have shown to be some of the best in terms of a specific setting, while only 1-2 (Gnuffone, and possibly Timinator) have reached the "Legend" status. Fridge and Psy are said to be very good 3v3 players and despite their lack of presence on the ladders, are fairly well known. Psy will be much better known in the future I think, especially if he starts playing 1v1's, but I removed him currently to go with Luxis. The underlying thing with this generation is that this generation still has work to do, but have already had a lot of success, and became known as good players in 2012, and great players in 2013. This is currently the dominant generation on warlight in terms of the ladders.

The Up and Coming Generation is full of players that have had a small amount of success very recently, and it looks likely they will continue on their road of success. Some of these players joined in 2013, while a couple joined in late 2011 but are only now making a big name for themself, and can't really be considered in the Experimental Generation. This generation is still learning a lot on warlight, and will continue to grow as a generation; this is the list that will change the most over time. An underlying thing with this generation is that they began to be noticed as good players in 2013.

I feel the next year will be a power struggle between The Experimental Generation and the Up and Coming Generation, and in my opinion, The Up and Coming generation will become the dominant generation near the end of 2014.

I feel you can debate some of the players on my list, and feel free to make your own lists, they are obviously going to be opiniated, as is mine. I was just looking for some well-known players to show what the generation is about.

I think individual high level players use very different styles of play. Its odd to group them chronologically.

Guessers: timi gnuff myhand (red). Win by guessing what the opponents picks and moves are likely to be based on their experience in thousands of games and use this knowlege to counter. Strong risk management skills.

Aggressive: dunga zaeban. Win by brute force, picking small bonuses, killing few neutrals, building big stacks and therefore leaving their opponent no room for error.

defensive: sze gui summer. Win by picking a collection of bonuses that are greater than the sum of their parts. They establish a small long term advantage with picks and then wait for it to win for them. Strong understanding of map balance.

solid: hhh chris teddy. Win by taking no risks and making no questionable moves and waiting for the opponent to screw up. I never look at a game they won and think "oh god, really?" about one of their moves. How I imagine an effective AI would play.

I dont know where i fit in. I usually understand roughly whats going to happen long before it does.

Oftentimes I see them grouped by style of play. I wanted to try something different.

I like your analysis and grouping of their styles though. You don't fit in any of those groups, you fit in the group I'd put myself, you, Frank, and TWM in, and I might move Summer to this group as well, although I've watched very few of her games so I'm not too sure. We tend to use different styles effectively, and our picks are more unpredictable than Sze, and dunga, while not being as unprdictable as Gnuffone's and Timinator's. I know I personally have used the top 3 styles often, and I rotate based on the game. I think you tend to lean more towards Agressive than me, but I feel you still use all 3 styles often, as well as solid.

Also, Do you mean you would put Anonymous in the guesser group? Or that he is myhand? The parenthesees is throwing me off :p

Anonymous is a biiiiig guesser but not a top level player. So he gets a nod in that group.

And so on an so forth. I may not be a big player. I do forum post a lot, am I important? Maybe. But what generation am I? I came in between the experimental and up and coming. Though I guess I'm experimental seeing as these new people on the forums (all the Illuminati members, a good deal of pulseys Alts).

First time I agreed with Nike for ages :/ Posting a lot doesn't make you a legend. Posting very interesting games/tournaments does. Forum legends would include Dunga, JSA, G. Mac and Lolowut.

what??? i agree about jay but only times i see Dunga is his nations post, i rarely see G.Mac around here, Lolowut is only posting those silly live tournies or vigorously defending his apex friends. The forum legends i had in mind were more along the lines like X and Qi.

i would put Gangnam style in The Experimental Generation, he was extremely good. He wins some live tourney, and he was a very good in 1v1s too.

The Up and Coming is not that true because you didn't include Verzehrer (nice job for mentioning lord btw). Also, you forgot to include Ruthless Bastard.

Oh, it's nice to be placed in such noble company, but after playing more than 6k games i don't feel i'm still improving, so 'Down and falling' would suit me better :P

gnuffone - i count 10.

as for the experimental gen - definitely GangnamStyle should be included. He is dominant in many templates and as Gnuff said - he is extremely good. But there were others there as well.. Psy, Brisk, Dreuj, Dunga, Boston, Beelz, Bumblebee and many many more.. However I'm not really sure about Summer - maybe we played different templates, but i feel like she wasn't that good until pretty much recently.. In my personal list i would put her in the third generation - Right on top of it as she went beyond most in 3rd gen, and i feel she started playing seriously sort of in between the two "waves" of players.. so either she's 2nd gen's last word, or the first of the fresh gen to come and crush "the old farts"..
