I think once a clan reaches over 20 it starts carrying a lot of dead weight, especially if clan members aren't active and don't communicate a lot.

Over 20? I'd say over 40....20 is an alright clan size.

30-40 is okay, but most clan events (i.e. Clan League, clan wars) don't require more than a dozen players, so large clans tend to prioritize their most skilled players and neglect the rest.

Also, larger communities tend to be dominated by a small group of talkers and a large number of spectators, while smaller communities encourage more communication between all players, imo. That's why I personally favor small communicative clans over larger ones.
