At the end of the day Warlight already 'rehomes' maps which are not fixed (connections wise). Also to address Mugzy, map makings spend hours and hours and hours making each map. It would be like any random person being able to enter a museum and start changing the paintings. Warlight map making is filled with preferences of the map maker, like all art forms thus there is not strict code of what is wrong and right in a map. What one person may view as 'fixing' could be another’s 'worsening'.

Why are people so concerned with protecting 'their work' ?

I can't understand why did you use apostrophe here. Did you mean to imply that it's not our work, or you were just trying to make it seem insignificant?

Are you generating revenue from your map?

Not generating revenue of something doesn't mean that you don't get credit for making it and doesn't make it unimportant.

Our whole world is built off of using other people's work.

Only by incompetent, uncreative and lazy people. The rest of us actually use our brain to make something.

@skunk940

Well said :D

I like to protect my assets. Revenue generating or not they still represent me.

Also the apostrophes are to represent how loosely the terms can be used.

Thanks

"It would be like any random person being able to enter a museum and start changing the paintings."

Awful analogy.

It'd be like taking pictures of the paintings and photoshopping the photo. We're talking about downloading the map and editing it, and re-uploading a modified version, not editing your version.

"Only by incompetent, uncreative and lazy people. The rest of us actually use our brain to make something. "

I hope you built the computer, tablet, phone, etc. that you use to access the game. Otherwise you're being incompetent, uncreative, and lazy. And by build I don't mean assemble.

No, sorry, it's intelligent people that benefit from the work of others, it's only prideful idiots that reinvent the wheel solely for the sake of saying they made it.

Note: I acknowledge that your maps are your property, revenue-generating or not, I just disagree with your need to "protect" your work. Open source communities create truly fantastic things, and is the route I think all non-profit-generating projects should go.

I don't understand why the need to download them without permissions. Just give feedback to the map maker. The only issue I see is inactive players. But again, allowing other people to make a version very close to it means they could simply download it, rename a territory that they think should be different, then submit it. Now we have two maps with no added value from the 2nd at all. There are already way too many maps IMO, ones that probably go completely unused. Why clutter it more? I'd rather see a system by Fizzer to fix maps with broken connections, etc.

Good Kid - let's use your example (mobile phone for example). Suppose you could simply download the code to a free app, tweak something, then put it up on the app store with your name on it. That is pretty dishonest to me, even if it were a free app and you make no money. It still implies you did all the work when you did not.

Think about a school paper. Just change a couple words out and submit someone else's work. Who cares, right? You aren't making any money off it, what is the difference?

My point is that profit should not drive this topic. Money has nothing to do with it IMO.

Being able to edit someone's work does not mean being able to reupload it and claim it as an original work.

ie.: https://github.com/welcor/tbamud

A project I work on, you can download the code and edit it freely, but it still has a license which has requirements you must legally adhere to if you use the code, primarily regarding not claiming a modified version of it as your own original work.

Well if it was a well played map, we would know who did the original.

Even if you did know, it does not address the issue of clutter. Better to fix the original than have a copy. Plus, eventually as the new one is played you would forget who did the original. Many times you dont even know without looking it up. I play europe a lot and i could not have told you troll made it until i looked.

No i didn't i just went to a sony factory and there it was just lying there so they simply handed over to me for free and they were even nice enough to ask me if i wanted to tamper with it. You know "make it better". But that's another story, and since we're talking about free, nonprofit things. Oh and yes I'M INCOMPETENT when it comes to building computers and mobile phones and also so many other things i know nothing about.

Just to make things clear, i have no problem with people downloading my maps and changing them for better. But i do have a problem with just about anyone downloading them. Let me make it clear: Someone could dislike how i named a territory, so he will download the map rename it "shitassfuck" and re-post the map. How does that improve anything? It only creates clutter as Chris said.

Mapmaker collaborate all the time, i can tell you this from experience. Rise of Rome was very different when i first made it, but after few tests and suggestions from other mapmakers it changed (for the better i hope). I would have no problem Ra changing something because i know he would do good work. So if you want to change something, show me what you can do, tell me what you want to change and why and we have no problem with it.

I was merely pointing out how ridiculous your original statement was. Everyone uses things others made. To not do so would be to severely handicap oneself.

Then what is the problem? You want to change maps? Show me you are good at that and like i said we can collaborate all you want. But if you can't draw a single vector, then yes i am against my map falling into your hands.

If you want a change a map that badly then make a new one yourself, after all you think you can do such a wonderful and better job.

(That sounded a little spiteful in my head)
