Mayby I'm educated diffrently, but I can't really imagine how one could make a spelling mistake that turns your to you're. On every english test I ever had that would be considered a grammar mistake.

My point was that spell-check only identifies non-words, not misspelled ones. Yes, it will catch many cases but most certainly not all cases and while it is grammar that points out the error, it is poor spelling that is the cause. There is no chance someone is going to swap 'liar' for 'lair' from a grammatical standpoint but it can easily happen in a misspelling standpoint. There are countless such situations in the English language (I know nothing of Polish so won't even touch that aspect)

Spell-check can only cover for so many sins.

From your last post Richard I think it is very liekly that the diffrence in our opinions are mostly due to diffrent languages we speak (or write in this case). Im not a native speaker of english and my vocabulary is far from vast so I can't speak as to how often one could make such a spelling mistake that wouldn't be cought by autocorrect. In polish it's extreamly unliekly and that's what I'm baseing my opinion on.

best regards

Touche Billy Washout.

I can see that you made meticulous effort to spell and punctuate your sentence but still managed to begin your sentence with 'And'. :P

Two points for you Ironheart:

MS Word uses British spelling if you use English (UK) spelling template or spellchecker.

British websites use British English and American websites use American English.

Thank you to Lord Fred100 {TJC} and [WM] It's Cool, Man.. for correcting my language.

In addition, Ozymandias melancholia • apex speaks the truth. I am now eating my own slice of humble pie.

I will readily admit that, as well as correcting blindingly obvious mistakes, I made a number of stylistic changes, which were not necessarily an improvement, and in some sentences, I retained some clauses which made entirely no sense.

The redundant third sentence especially seems, redundantly, to be a redundant product of the Department of Redundancy Department, a department I find to be completely redundant.

Using GCSE's as your example is laughable. Using anything relating to school is laughable. The failing education system is a large part of why the current generation is stupid. The other part is failed parenting.

The educational system has taught us that being able to do basic math doesn't matter either since we can just use a calculator whenever we have a problem to solve.

Being able to spell and do basic math without the usage of a spellchecker or a calculator matters.

Spelling and grammar are direct indicators of your intelligence. They're also an indicator of your respect for your reader.

Start sending in resumes and CV's (though I'm not actually sure most people today will ever send in a CV, hell, I've found a large amount of people that think a CV is a cover letter, it's not, it's a curriculum vitae) with spelling errors and tell me where that gets you. I already know where it'll get you - tossed in the trash pile along with the other rejected applicants. Not only will the prospective employers think you are stupid, they will think you don't respect them or take yourself very seriously (since when you write a resume you are being a salesman, and the product you are selling is yourself, and you've shown that you don't think highly enough of your product to put in the time and effort needed to sell it).

Spelling matters even more so online, people have very little to judge you on intellectually other than what you write.

If you write poorly people are going to assume that you're stupid, and for good reason as far as I'm concerned. If you can't spell basic words correctly I don't trust you to do anything of any real importance, since anything I'd consider to be of real importance is a lot more difficult than spelling.

We should all stop correcting each others mistakes and take a deep look at ourselves. Who here has perfect grammar and spelling? Not I. Even if I did, I would still remain humble in my perfection.

GCSE's [...] CV's

Yeah, let's all take a lesson in application of grammar from the guy who uses grocer's plurals, or whatever they are called.

Who here has perfect grammar and spelling?

Me, I do. I re-read and check spellings if I have to. Gui and Mikkelsen are also perfect in this regard. It's not that amazing.

I don't know Ozy... having PERFECT grammar can be difficult. It means not starting and ending sentences with certain words etc. I would wager that your above post would get at least one criticism by the strictest grammar teachers (I can't cite any since my grammar is not at that level)

That said, having near-perfect spelling and grammar (as you have) is quite simple and straightforward. Just requires a modicum of attention and intelligence.

You most certainly do not have perfect grammar and spelling X, nor do Gui or Mikkelsen. Above par? Sure. Perfection? No.

I'd argue that there's no such thing as perfect grammar, since there are various standards. I would simply give the oxford comma as proof of that. The debates on those contentious grammar subjects are where real pedantry lies, so I don't go there.

There are also degrees of formality within grammatically correct language.

Did you at all consider that most people here are not native speakers? It's kind of impossible for them to have anything even near perfect grammar or spelling. I can understand you advocateing putting lots of attention to a CV or something simmilar, but postulating perfect grammar and spelling on a multinational internet forum is with all due respect plain stupid.

My dear fellow Artham. This thread is simply a medium by which we may all flex our brains and duel with each other through criticism, sarcasm and wit. It is also an opportunity to demonstrate our knowledge of yet another subject or topic in this case spelling. It provides entertainment for both writer and reader thus performing some service to some members of this dastardly community including myself. Nothing with purpose should be considered stupid. The purpose of this thread is to entertain with the by-product of raising the awareness of breeches in spelling and grammar etiquette.
