Hello guys,

I wanted to ask if I'm alone in wanting the option to globally turn off the chat (especially in 1v1 games). I find that these days a very high percentage of conversations during 1v1 games quickly turn toxic to a degree that has an impact, if not on my mental health, then certainly on my mood.

For me personally it requires some effort to shake off the negativity and also to not get offended. Instead of having a nice calm evening game of Warzone to wind down I find my self basically harassed online, angrily accused of cheating by being too slow, or any list of insults and profanities, intended to get under my skin.

Of course, being an adult requires emotional maturity which entails being able to shake these things off and carry on, but it's quite taxing where something that's supposed to be a calm and pleasant little escape instead becomes something toxic and draining, like online bullying.

It's hard to know how much of this language is people having a bad day and protected by a screen and username just lets it all out on the rest of us, or how much is trolling, ie intentionally trying to trigger negative emotions in others for fun. But at the end of the day, I don't care. I don't want to read it.

Reporting a player also feels silly since I many times find myself triggered and responding with similar language, which must make the moderator look at it as a ridiculous case of "who started it" and simply ignore it.

I see some possible solutions to clean up the atmosphere where perhaps the easiest would be introducing a user setting where one could globally opt out of participating in 1v1 chats. (It's not uncommon that the first thing my opponents write is something highly offensive so I'd like turn it off before the first emotional attack rather than after).

There might be additional more sophisticated solutions, for instance maybe some kind of sportsmanship score could be introduced where players using negative emotional language would lose the ability to participate in the chats. Or perhaps other players could set a threshold where they will only see messages from players above a certain score. In principle not totally unlike how players with a high boot frequency will be prevented from joining certain games.

For me personally, simply ignoring the red flashing number at the bottom of the screen isn't an option as I don't know if someone is coming with a pleasant "well played" or "good game" in which case I'd like to respond.

Anyways, I would like to hear if I'm alone in this or what other people think about this topic.

Best
/D

Global chat block = you can't see the GG WP either

Think you just have to learn to ignore it, once you've read enough, don't even read anymore from that person, blocklist that player & certainly don't respond to any of it

It's not worth your time responding to it, and tbh it doesn't matter why they type it, just take care of yourself

+1, let's stop the toxicity!

PS. Just a random game (probably absolutely not related to the topicstarter), where one player is so insulted by the other player's accusations of him playing slowly, so that he suggests that that other player's "mom wants more" of him to "finish", and then they both go all the way...: https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=35029989

From a game, you can disable chat notifications. Game > Settings > (scroll to bottom) > Mute Public chat notifications.
Could do with a general setting though otherwise it would be a pain to do for every game.

yes, you can disable chat but that like popping acetaminophen, it’s dealing with symptoms not cause. can we not band together better to cut the toxicity out?

Yes FiveSmith, that was me. Not proud of it but it's a good example. I don't expect moderators to care about the "who started it" but my opinion is that once that energy is in the chat it's really tempting to respond with more of the same.

And yes, one should always respond politely to insults or simply ignore it, but sometimes it's just difficult and my point is, I'm not here to practice my patience, I'm here to recharge and wind down.

Looking at one example it seems that the person complaining about the toxicity is the one who is toxic. It went about bitching about slowness to him talking about the dudes mother.

Rather ironic dontcha think, a little too ironic.

I get that I've lost my credibility on this so I'm not going to argue it further but I do think it's still a relevant topic. After all, however unflattering, the game that FiveSmith shared with us is an example of what I'm talking about. (I think it was the second or third game that evening that someone angrily accused me of "cheating" for playing "slow", and I snapped. Should I have? Of course not. Am I proud of it? Of course not. Does it invalidate my point? I don't think so).

Like I said in my original post:
"Reporting a player also feels silly since I many times find myself triggered and responding with similar language, which must make the moderator look at it as a ridiculous case of "who started it" and simply ignore it."

Should I get myself some thicker skin? Yes of course. Must warzone be a place to have it tested? Well, I'm just trying to enjoy a brief escape from life. It would be nice to be able to just play by the rules without having to deal with that type of negativity.

I find it hard to believe but I realize this might just be a me problem. Either way I don't think my voice is helping here so I'll leave it at that.

I agree, I'm not sure why this thread has evolved into accusations of hypocrisy. My best guess is that people have trouble with reading.

Your suggestion is very good and I can definitely see the trend in modern gaming with disabling chats. There is no game chat in official Hasbro's Risk Online, there is no chat in Blizzard's juggernaut Hearthstone. The reason is simple: people play games to entertain themselves, preferably without dealing with idiots online.

Having an option to disable chat wouldn't hurt, but I don't expect it to be implemented, I don't think the demand is high enough.

Global chat block = you can't see the GG WP either.

And that's another benefit, ggwping after each and every MD game is annoying. You see the game has unread chat so you open it just to see "gg". I wish fewer people did that.

Every game with chat may be toxic as a nuclear disposal site -> play games without chat/don't open chat
