How to make Two Paths One Territory? [LLUSTRATOR]: 3/20/2015 02:46:15

Hey guys. So I'm trying my hand at map-making using Adobe Illustrator and I've run into a dilemma. I'm attempting to make a map of Tellius from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. Some areas on the map have tiny little chains of islands. I don't want to make these individual territories because they are so small, but I'd like to keep them around so the map looks as accurate as possible. I was trying to include them as part of another territory, as seen above, but when I upload the SVG file it says it doesn't accept Groups in Illustrator with the territory tag (EX: Territory 22).

Warlight only has how-tos for Inkscape and I've already made the bulk of the map in Illustrator, for which there are few tutorials. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

Yeah use inkscape. It has union, exclusion, etc. all those spatial tools make it way faster.

Select both objects

Objects > Compound path > Make or just ctrl + 8

or

Windows > Pathfinder > or Shift + Ctrl + F9 a window should pop up then use the first option "Unite" it looks something like two filled squares

One more thing to save you the trouble latter on :D

When you get to naming territories the warlight help section says to name them Territory_(the name of the territory) in Illustrator just avoid the _ and use empty space so:

Territory_Alabama (not going to work)

Use instead

Territory Alabama (Illustrator writes this as Territory_Alabama in his code for some reason)

And by the way forget the "Use Inkscape" advice, Illustrator is far more versatile and powerful tool it's just too expensive for beginners and has a steep learning curve, also the combination with photoshop and indesign works wonders in easing the workflow :D . If you can manage that then I would recommend continuing with it.

Cheers

Thanks so much, Incaman! :D

And double thank you actually because I was using another thread you created earlier to get started while working with Illustrator. That underscore problem was really throwing me off until I found your thread.
