Smolensk Battle was the morale boost that the Blitzkrieg could be stopped.
Moscow Battle predicted the end
Stalingrad Battle put the end in motion
Kursk Battle assured the end (and was the only one in which the German Blitzkrieg totally failed)

Also, America is not the most powerful country in the world - you know who really is.

Really? Because in another thread, it was stated that America has the power to overthrow entire governments and install dictatorships, that it can create worldwide terrorist groups, and that it could unbeknownst to the us populace spy on every American citizen and indoctrinate them all, that America's decisions in foreign policy have set up the modern geopolitical scene, that America's dollar is the reserve currency, that America leads a coalition of the strongest nations.

It is supposed statistical fact that America's economy is twice the output of China's(despite 1/4 the population and less PhDs) and 5x as much as the countries after that. It is supposed fact that America has military bases across the world, a Navy that is unmatched, a very large modern air force. It is supposed fact that US has over $16 trillion debt to other countries and is still afloat. It is supposed fact that America hosts several big businesses and banks that influence the world every day. It is supposed fact that America has fought for over 200 years of its 238-year existence, and still stands. It is supposed fact that the country has witnessed many severe lows and yet it remains afloat.

Based upon this information and countless other factors, you are quite the (ironically) fool if you think America is matched by any sole nation. (Edit: in the modern world. )

If you respond to this, bring it to an American bash thread and I'll respond there because i don't want this lovely thread derailed.

Battle of Pydna
Roman army in manipular system put the phalanx formation out of date decisively.

Thank you for the information, Mr. Expert. Although this doesn't pertain to a battle, I want to ask you the following question:

Would Russia have been defeated had Japan decided to attack them, rather than attacking the USA at Pearl Harbor?

I would like to hear your opinion on this.

What would they attack? "Japanese bombers have destroyed a square mile of forest in Siberia"

Yeah, Tupac's right; Siberia is perfect for guerilla warfare. It's only taiga and tundra, so Russia would lose Vladivostok and Khabaravosk, but otherwise, good luck getting to Novosibirsk, let alone Europe.

Think a similar outcome to the Japanese intervention in the Russian Civil War, and maybe double or triple the Japanese success/outcome; that's how successful they would be.

Note: Japan/Manchuko was playing footsies with Mongolia until around 1939 (with Mongolia winning with Soviet support by far; see Khalkhin Gol Battle).

Concerning WWII -- would Russia (or England) have been able to defeat the Germans without the American Lend/Lease program?

I'd say the beginning o the end of the war for Japan was the attack on Perl Harbor. as Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto put it, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." They may have been able to stretch it out more if they would have then attacked the West Coast refinaries and done a land invasion of Hawaii -- but the end was written in the beginning.

It showed what a few pirates, southern dudes and a very poorly funded army could do to top notch, experienced British troops. Aside from that nothing.

[qoute]Battle of Pydna
Roman army in manipular system put the phalanx formation out of date decisively.[/qoute]

Nope, this did not bring phalanx formation out of date ( hoplite phalanx nor pike phalanx) The Macedonians lost the battle for 3 reasons.

1. Hilly area not good for pikes or calvary. Both being a dominate factor for their army.

2. There are different versions but this is the most sufficient. Roman scavengers met with some Macedonias ions and a skirmish broke out. after a while the generals on both sides realized this is no longer a skirmish and hasty got into formation.

3. Once the battle truly started the Romans were getting no where since pikes are literary a wall of spears. Romans did a planned retreat. Got the pikes on hilly ground. Gaps were made in the wall. Romans took the opportunity and punched hard were they were weak. And the right wing of Macedonian calvary never joined battle which was a huge mistake.

Phalanxes were still used by the Greeks and romans even after this.

Are you learning roman history? You been bring it up lately.

It's a shame folk know all this history which is so far away it can be considered mythological, yet I bet you can't even name all Soviet communist leaders, nor the other famous ones.

Leon and Leonid is more important than Leonidas.

It is history and not mythology. It is not a shame. You can learn the same things from people that far back to people of today's world.

Leonidas did nothing special well kinda. Him and 300 Spartans and 1100 ally troops ( yes not just 300 like most people think) held back a massive force. But really it wasnt a shocking surprise. Greeks had better armour and weapons compared to persia. 1 greek cost about 8-10 Persians. Also it was a choke point battle. No strategy just hold the funnel.
