There was a very interesting study about how people using the internet actually overestimate their own knowledge (or intelligence), in which scientists conclude:

"searching the Internet for explanatory knowledge creates an illusion whereby people mistake access to information for their own personal understanding of the information.”

Interesting paper myhand! I'm going to refrain from nagging on their statistical mistakes and focus on their results only. :-)

They do seem to be on to something, the effects were pretty strong and consistent over the studies and it makes a lot of sense, nice find. It's been a while since I actually enjoyed reading a psychology paper.

Incorrect Thomas, I took about 4 hours to take it (Sports and such), got all of them right and got 153. That is not my IQ though.

yea, IQ doesn't mean anything. People with high IQ's are only moderately more successful than those with lower IQ's. the only two things that matter are creativity and curiosity, as they are the foundation of all sciences.
Just so you guys know i'm not saying this because i got a low IQ, mine is 180+.

OK, to clarify stuff: After some very complex maths (that I won't explain here since you wouldn't understand) I came up with following forumula: "Internet IQ" - 55 = "Real life IQ".

As I said the maths behind my formula is super complex and I won't explain. Here just some good arguments for you that my formula is correct:
- In forum threads the average IQ people claim to have after those IQ tests is 140 while it should be 100.
- It shows a lack of intelligence to take internet IQ tests serious so people posting their "Internet IQ" in such threads should be way below 100.
- Iasonas has an "Internet IQ" (IIQ) of 141. However his 1v1 win rate of 23% is way below the average 50%. That's another arguemt that an "Internet IQ" of 140 has to translate to something below 100 "Real Life IQ" (RLIQ).

1. I took a real-life IQ test and my score was way less than 55 below my "Internet IQ"

2. You can copy a "Real-Life" IQ Test onto the internet.

3. What is the difference between real-life and the internet, if you are a computer programmer, you would know that the goal of AI is to mimic a human brain.

4. 1v1 Win-rate and IQ have nothing to do with one another.

Your "Good Arguments"

As I said the maths behind my formula is super complex and I won't explain you probably thought of a random number and tried to make it sound legitimate.

In forum threads the average IQ people claim to have after those IQ tests is 140 while it should be 100 I said I recieved a score of 153, my IQ is not anywhere near 113.

Iasonas has an "Internet IQ" (IIQ) of 141. However his 1v1 win rate of 23% is way below the average 50%. That's another arguemt that an "Internet IQ" of 140 has to translate to something below 100 "Real Life IQ" (RLIQ). This is my favorite one. I already said that 1v1 win-rate and IQ are not the same at all.

Good for you. I was actually ranked first in my country's official math contest when I was in high school. Still, I'm pretty sure that my IQ is (way) lower than 141. (Also, my country is about ten times as large as yours, so you'd probably rank about 40th-50th in my country.)

My only remaining question: if you are that smart, why feel the need to brag about your (wrongly estimated) IQ or ranking 5th on a math contest on Warlight? Look around you: a big chunk of the players here have a higher degree in science related fields or are well on their way towards it, so even if your real IQ is 141, you're not impressing anyone. You are even lucky that so far most of the answers have been by reasonable people because the trolls would have been even less nice about it.

@Benjamin628: I was talking shit that I have come up with in a couple of seconds...

However I do believe that there is a very strong correlation between a (non farmed) 1v1 win rate and intelligence. I very often see people in team games expanding into someting like a "2 income 4 territories bonus" while they could expand into a "5 income 4 territories bonus". I seriously believe that those guys are super stupid.

@ Norman: practice and wanting to play well does a lot as well. As an example: I would claim that all members from my clan are above average intelligent people because I know their background. Yet, several of them have an average win rate and ladder ranking. If you aren't on Warlight for a long time or you play for fun without paying much attention, it's relatively easy to get a low win rate. Additionally, decent players who mainly play the ladder get a win rate close to 50% anyway (example: myself). Nevertheless I agree to some point that there very likely is a (strong) correlation.

Did someone say math contest?

Hmm, how about we make a math contest on warlight? I can prepare some questions and then you send answers in pm, dropbox or mail depending on the format of the answers. I've done it once in the past on a math forum and it was quite fun :) I know it's irrelevant to the topic, but since the topic is irrelevant I don't have any regrets about it :)
