My great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents fought in the two World Wars and I guess they probably even fought in the Boer War before that and right back to the original Anglo-Briton Civil War.

I think everyone should be proud of what their ancestors did for us to shape this world. (Unless you're German, of course).

Regardless of how vile you may think the Germans may be, they were still people who, in the end, only wanted a better future for their children.

EDIT:I changed the link. The new one is the one I ment to post.

"What we in the German resistance never wanted to understand, we have learned afterwards: That the war finally wasn't led against Hitler, but against Germany"
- Eugen Gerstenmaier, German politician and co-conspirator of 20 July plot

Approximately 77,000 German citizens were killed for one or another form of resistance against the Nazi-regime.

Nobody wants to forget the nazi holocaust, but there is much more German history than the 12 years of Hitler's reign. And I guess I don't have to say that Germans are and even were not automatically Nazis. Indeed, nazism was always present among Germans in this time, but same with fascism in Italy, Hungary or Romania.

Great story Kur.

My Grandfather was in WW2 stationed in Hawaii and Japan. I remember asking him about the war when I was seven and he didn't want to talk about it as young as I was. I can't remember the exact conversation but I thought he should be more proud because he was on the "good guys" team and they won. He seemed pretty pissed and he told me that nobody should be proud of killing. You have to do something good to be proud! He also explained to me that both sides are just people controlled by crooked governments and that we are the bad guys from the enemies perspective. He died before I turned 8 but I'm lucky to have spent a lot of time with him up until then. He taught me a lot.

I also had a great uncle who was stationed a few places but I know he was in Germany. He was hit with mustard gas twice and shot once. He had a bunch of loot. Mostly guns. He had a super fancy nazi dagger. I can't find anything like it on google.

It was kind of like this but with gold and rubys.

I always thought he was cool as a kid because he had sweet and sour tattooed above his nipples and a dancing lady on his arm.

Sounds like a cool guy. That sweet n sour tattoo made me lose a lot of respect for him though lol jkjkjk.

Almost all of my great uncles died in ww2. The one who came back was leading a platoon when he came across a German brigade in 1945. He fibbed and said there was a whole tank division right behind him. The German officer surrendered his men, and gave my great uncle his pistol (a luger) as an affirmation of this. He lost the gun when he went back home in the states, and hates himself for it to this day.

I remember some stories... of my grandfather both in WW1 & WW2 during the Prussians have occupied us. My family were just basic farmers, nothing more than that.

My grandfather was abducted to Germany and forced to work there in around 1942. They needed some Belgians to work in the coal mines near Dusseldorf. Actually in constrast to elsewhere in Germany he got treated pretty nicely by the locals. Sometimes his bosses threw fruit at him when they saw hem working in misery.

At the end of World war 2 his stage ended and he was returning home. Sadly enough the British bombed some train stations in that area which made it impossible for him to return by train. He was being left out alone to go to Belgium with his own feet and knocking on doors where he passed to ask for food. He walked for more than 150km when he safely returned to the hometown. He had some horrible memories about that trip.

I have 3 ancestors, which fought in World War 2. My great-granduncle was a Luftwaffe officer and got shot over Upper Normandy. My paternal great-grandfathers both fought in the German Africa Korps. One of them survived the war after getting in Allied captivity in 1942. He always told that he and his comrades got treated very nice - at least by the Americans. However, during the passage to Britain he had to watch Polish guards torturing Italian prisoners and the British crew didn't cared, although the entire ship heard the cries. He was glad that he didn't had to fight on the Russian front, otherwise he probably would've seen much larger sorrow.

As a kid, my father together with our family's chronicler tought me what was our coat of arms, what it meant and gave me a paper with our family tree to 13th generation back. Would take to long to discuss. :)

I wonder how many people even care about their families' past at all nowadays..
