I've always been skeptical about fluoride. I've thought fluoride was just one of the many impurities that is caused by water refineries.

Authoritarian vs libertarian has more actual significance than terms left left/right or liberal/conservative, imo. Plenty of capitalist systems show more respect for the individual worker than some ostensibly communist regimes like, say, North Korea or do.

In the USA at least, the "left" is socially liberal, but economically authoritarian. The "right" is socially authoritarian yet economically liberal. It shows how politics and ideology really don't have as much overlap as you'd think.

It's also the same reason "anarchists" can label themselves as "left." Yeah, socially they are. Economically they're anything but "left" in modern political parlance.

you could say the right in america is economically authoritarian because their policies make the rich richer and the poor poorer, and put even more power in the hands of multinational corporations (arguably the real rulers of our country). the left want more controls on the economy but only to keep those at the top from gaming the system. in my view an even playing field is what the left are after, which is antithetical to authoritarians.

it is tricky defining this stuff because it is seen differently by both sides.

and of course im only talking about america.

So for the purpose of this thread:

left:

anti-capitalist
anti-imperialist
generally opposed to structural oppression

right:

usually capitalist
opposes anti-imperialism and anti-colonialism on some level (or finds those movements problematic)
does not focus on ending structural oppression, although may be opposed to centralized governments that limit property rights or states' rights

Your close. Let me elaborate.

For those of us who live in America here is the Republican platform https://www.gop.com/platform/.

Here is the democrat platform. https://www.democrats.org/party-platform

In America, the Republicans sit on the right side of the aisle and Democrats sit on the left side of the aisle in case you didn't know that.

Here is the summary of the Democrat platform. http://www.ontheissues.org/Archive/2012_DNC_Platform_Democratic_Party.htm

Here is a summary of the republican platform.
http://www.ontheissues.org/Archive/2012_RNC_Platform_Republican_Party.htm

As you can see the Democrats support more (not total) socialism in the economy. They want welfare, medicare, obamacare, medicaid, high corporate tax rates and entitlements all of which INCREASE the governments control of the economy.

They also support REMOVING the government from people's personal lives. They also support the US responsibly withdrawing from Iraq and Afghanistan which may be an imperialist issue or it may be a safety issue.

The Democrats are indeed opposed to Capitalism and (perceived) imperialism but sometimes they want more structural oppression (like the ACA) and sometimes they want less. That is the left.

The Republicans on the other hand want more (not total) capitalism in the economy. They don't like welfare, medicare, obamacare, medicaid, high corporate tax rates and entitlements which INCREASE government control of the economy. The republican economic approach can be best summarized as "laissez faire", literally meaning "leave it alone."

On domestic issues the Republicans support MORE government control of people's personal lives. They used to stand against gay marriage. They wish to limit late-term abortions. Republicans also extremely hate Russian Imperialism especially with the events of Donbass.

The Republicans are opposed to Socialism and foriegn Imperialism but sometimes they want more structural oppression (like the government surveillance programs) and sometimes they want less (like destroying entitlements and the ACA).

TLDR: You, knyte, make it seem like you have to be a Communist or a Socialist to be part of the left and you need to be a Fascist to be part of the left. The facts are that MORE people are in the middle(liberals, conservatives) of the political divide than out at the ends(Communist/Socialist, Fascist). The facts are that nobody actually supports Colonialism/Imperialism anymore in the west because it is so unpopular. You will only find that in Russia (a leftist country).

I'm left-wing on economics, right-wing on social issues. On the standard spectrum that makes me impossible to place, which is why many say it's not really that accurate.

Risk is a game of smarts, naturally only people with at least half a brain play. So people are come here are at least minimally aware of politics. Not to mention the heavy connection with geography Warlight has, the heavy historical maps and the diplomacies in which people attempt to act like historical leaders. So, basically, a crew of players interested in geopolitics, history and, as such, politics.

Hence why WarLight has such a huge amount of political debates.

Why the majority of us are right-wing? Hell, I don't know.

As for myself? Central-right wing. I guess this ain't quite my place =P

- anti-imperialist

Sorta. Every country wants their influence to grow, so every country is imperialist. Thing is, the ones with the larger influence areas tend to get this credit (e.g. Russia, USA, Britain, Japan...)

- anti-fascist

Yes. I believe having less people in power means more efficiency, but then again it is risky to overly empower someone, as the more powerful he is, the harder to take him down if he has a change of heart.

- anti-capitalist

No. Ambition is what makes the world goes around, not money. Money is just the embodiment of ambition. If we stop being ambitious, we freeze technologically.

- opposed to all forms of structural oppression

This is a tricky question, as "opression" can be taken in many ways.

- sympathetic to the idea of worker control of the means of production

Definetely not. Throw a bunch of people in a factory and tell them to make... clothing, for example. Naturally someone is taking the lead to keep order, cause if no one does, total chaos starts.

Since people are describing their views, I'm personally a libertarian Marxist/Situationist.

Civilization has no definitive starting point, Tupac. But most can point to ancient China, ancient Egypt, ancient sumeria and the Indus ricer valley as starting points of civilization. In reality, we've had organized governing systems and archiving systems since Stonehenge and the days of hunters /gatherers.

On the concept of nationalism;

I have never liked the insanity that seems to always come with patriotism. However, I am, and always have been, a huge advocate of community. Growing up, several close-knit communities have had a huge influence on my upbringing, and to the day I day I will always think of them as family. I wish this were commonplace in everyone's lives, because nothing is worse than feeling isolated, alone from anyone that would care about your well-being. Perhaps mega-nations such as the USA are too large to effectively create such a feeling -- the knowledge that you can trust everyone around you, and that you are all one family, sharing the same world -- but I do feel that even if it is not entirely possible, there still could be more done to establish such a community.

That, I suppose, is the closest I will ever come to feeling like a USA 'patriot'.

LIBERTARIAN
Libertarians support maximum liberty in both personal and economic matters. They advocate a much smaller government; one that is limited to protecting individuals from coercion and violence. Libertarians tend to embrace individual responsibility, oppose government bureaucracy and taxes, promote private charity, tolerate diverse lifestyles, support the free market, and defend civil liberties.
