I'll do my best to invite you to the game - it's going to be a busy weekend!

As for random.org: is there a way to use that website to randomly generate Mafia roles *without anyone in the game knowing who they are*? I don't know of one.

The goal of design is to remove the need for a "game master", or someone who knows the roles, and, therefore, cannot play.

It also doesn't use any random processes but still maintains complete lack of knowledge or certainty, which was a design goal. I think it's interesting!

More importantly:

It looks like there is no way to delay a tournament starting, so I may have to "re-create" the game manually after the tournament begins. This is a pain!

Boy, I would love to have this option:

Please vote for it - or suggest a better way!

Go here -> https://www.random.org/lists/
One name per line, enter the name of every participant, and click "randomize". The top five names are the
mafia members.
There's no way any way anyone else can view the results. Of course, that means you must trust your game master, and that the game master cant play.

Well, that's hardly revolutionary! There are a million ways to do this with a "game master".

The whole point of my design is to remove the need for a game master at all. :)

It may be possible to create a bot to use as a game master, but I'm pretty sure it would violate TOS.

I would rather have a simple system that requires a game master then a super complex one that does not <_<

Well, that's certainly fair! But I enjoyed the design challenge of doing this way, and it's not all that complicated in practice (really, the initial composition of the messages was the only tricky part).

The game will be under way shortly... if anyone wants in, there is still one spot remaining.

And the game has begun!

It looks like the procedure worked well. We will see how the game progresses: it is not yet obvious to anyone what strategy they should pursue.

Regarding your message 3: If you send someone a "message 3", they will immediately know that you are part of the mafia, and since they will be the person to publicly announce that the mafia has been decided, everyone will know that said person knows about 1 mafia member. This could easily be a problem, since the Mafia then ends up with one player less than they started with, simply because of the procedure with the messages.

Not necessarily as message three could already have been forwarded before.

Ah, damn, I must have missed that while reading through the setup process. Never mind then, you never know whether you received message 3 from a mafia member or a civilian, in which case it doesn't pose a problem.

Here's an interesting dilemma:

Should people be allowed to post screenshots of their received and/or sent messages?

I'm leaning towards "no", since it effectively makes it a game of Photoshop instead of a game of Mafia, and may be asking too much of, say, people who play on their phones (or don't have photo editing software).

This is analogous, in my mind, to how players in a regular Mafia game are not allowed to simply show their role assignment card to "prove" that they are civilians.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this matter? I'm open to arguments for or against.

Although a game of photoshop would be fun, i would agree that posting screenshots is a bit analogous to showing "assignment card to "prove" that they are civilians".
:)
Edit: can i be part of the next mafia game?
