The establishment begins its latest and perhaps most significant project to censor YouTube.

The AI moves offending videos into a limbo state where they cannot be interacted with or shared. YouTube even admitted that the AI does not just target videos that violate the TOS - it targets "extremist" content. Now anyone with half a brain knows the label "extremism" is empty sophistry. They're not saying they're going to target the advocacy of violence - they're straight up saying they're going to censor whatever the fuck they want. Don't think the Left is safe - the AI might detect a verbalized "Nazi" in a response video. The organic left is too radical for corporate globalism anyway - expect censorship of Communist viewpoints.

Not to mention there's no appeal process for getting your video shitcanned.

The problem is clearly transnational corporations. A transnational corporation cannot risk offending anyone, anywhere in the world, especially governments that heavily censor, like China and the EU. To do so would alienate their partners.

My question is, if we allow the government to place regulations on companies, why can't we force the government to force YouTube to eliminate censorship? We penalize companies that cut corners. We penalize racial discrimination - hell the government mandates affirmative action. How about we use the power of the State to save the flow of information from distortion, since society would disintegrate otherwise.

But this is only the first in a long series of battles to come. Censorship only comes out of necessity - when YouTube didn't need to censor content, the arguments presented in controversial videos weren't compelling enough. YouTube and the entire shitty fake corporate media has backed itself into a corner, where outright censorship is the only way forward. With every drastic action they take, they alienate more of their supporters.

I honestly think censorship is a bad idea. I mean yea, remove the stuff that violates the TOS, but videos shouldn't be censored just because they're extreme in view.

> ban "Controversial religious or supremacist"

>Implicit bias tests show everyone is a racists

>solution: ban everybody

I have watched Philip DeFranco's video on the subject. He had some interesting points. Such as the fact that, according to YouTube, 400 hours of content are uploaded every minute. Which explains why so much of what they do is automated. It has to be. His most important point was that YouTube plan to segregate some content. Which means that certain videos will be placed beyond what YouTube call an interstitial.

Words matter.

YouTube is quoted by Philip DeFranco:

We'll soon be applying tougher treatment to videos that aren't illegal, but have been flagged by users for potential violations of our policies on hate speech and violent extremism. If we find these videos don't violate our policies, but contain controversial religious or supremacist content they will be placed in a limited state. The videos will remain on YouTube behind an interstitial, won’t be recommended, won’t be monetised, and won’t have key features including comments, suggested videos, and likes.

So what is an interstitial and why are they using this curious word? The word is used in the worlds of biology and crystallography. Computer advertising guys use the word for popup ads and things of that nature. In general it is used to describe things found within other things which they are not an intrinsic part of. So a tumor is within an organ interstitially. In this case they mean a barrier.

Let's be straight. They are going to bury the videos in question.

The moment I heard the word interstitial I thought of Orwell's essay Politics and the English Language. Orwell's essay is amongst other things a "catalogue of swindles and perversions" that appear when people are either being lazy or are trying to conceal their meaning.

So instead of telling people that their video is being buried you tell them "you video has been placed behind an interstitial." It's bewildering. Deliberately so.

Does it matter?

Yes.

They are already taking away the advertising (money) away from political commentators, as well as from content like videos on guns, but now due to the crude nature of their sorting algorithms they are doing dirt to gamers who do Let's Play videos. Which is stupid. Unless you think that video game violence is a great threat to civilization and civility. Some people think this.

What Google and YouTube employees think is anyone's guess.
