What's the end goal? Just indefinitely occupy countries, only making them more angry at yous?
Afghanistan's current administration is content with his decision for now. And if people's feelings are more important to you than their lives then we'll just have to disagree on that. Trying to fix mistakes, no matter how futile, is a lot better than abandoning a region after causing it so much turmoil.

A better question is, will non-Americans ever support any decision America makes?

We pulled out of Iraq, as people wanted us to do, and then once ISIS shows up everyone gets mad at the U.S for pulling out too soon.

So we decide to stay in Afghanistan, to avoid another power vacuum. Now we're evil imperialists and we need to pull out. How much you want to bet that if we withdraw troops and the Taliban takes over all you European folks will be blaming the U.S for not staying longer?

Damned if we do, damned if we don't. I'd take criticisms of the U.S a lot more sincerely if the people giving out the criticisms weren't often so blatantly hypocritical.
The problem is that the US walks into countries and then leaves witout longtime solutions. If they actually want the country to be terrorfree they have to make the country stable. Education, healthcare, functioning economy, fair election, stamping out corruptions. Those are the things the US should do in a country, because a stable country is less likely to be a breeding ground for terrorists or civil wars. Increasing military presence without proper care of the country will only increase insurgency in the long run.

Correct. Maybe some of the money this government spends on the military should be set aside for this stuff. Some countries could use these things, especially the ones the US screwed itself. Come to think of it, there are a lot of inner cities in the US that could use some better education, at least.

Cata kind of gets it. You don't stabilize countries, you just kill a couple people and then leave. Either do nothing or do stuff right.

Afghanistan, I support intervention somewhat; they aren't quite in control of their country. But then again, having the US do it again doesn't feel like a safe idea.

Another word for 'American exceptionalism' is just American imperialism.

So much anti-american hate here. sigh.

From 1776-1946 America did not involve itself in the affairs of other nations. Every time we won a war we went home. No bases. No foreign entanglements. No telling other countries what to do.

I heard somewhere from a historian this quote. "The further America gets from its frontier/pioneer/egalitarian roots the more mistakes it will make on the international stage."

I generally agree with this idea. America is only going to screw up more as time goes on, not less. The question, therefore, is "Is there a better coalition-builder in the world?"

The US mission in Afghanistan should look like this.

1. Train the Afghan forces. "Train hard. Fight easy." is a good motto.
2. Provide air support.
3. Make foreign aid to the Afghan government dependent on anti-corruption laws/prosecution. Corruption ruined Chiang kai shek and South Vietnam.
4. Encourage the Afghan government to get rid of the Masadas. They are training generation after generation of terrorists. The Afghan schools system needs to be secularized.

How many times do you need to make the same mistake in order to learn????

is it a "mistake" when the defence/weapons contracters are making money which goes into politicians' pockets while those governments who're not allied with America are getting killed?

This is an awful attitude to have. that a country is "morally good" and evil plans are just "mistakes".

will non-Americans ever support any decision America makes?

of course unless you live in a state foe of it. i know you are refering to some kind of hypocrisy you see but those aren't the same folk saying both things. It's impossible for some things to be universally loved.

those that do want America to keep on warring want America to do it "right" and "morally"

War in Afghanistan is better than war with Russia; Trump is therefore a better option than Hillary.

I doubt anyone got mad at the US for leaving Irak. As a matter of fact, most didn't want you to go there in the first place. People get mad at you for breaking countries and then not bother to fix your mess, and then claim you saved the day. Anyhow, Kudos to Bush for having started the hole Irak mess.

I support any action that isn't dumb and ill-thinked.

Foreign policy Obama did good in his negotiations with Cuba, Iran and the anti-ISIS coalition. He did awfully in Syria, Lybia and Guantanamo. A good negotiator, but very poor jugement of the Arab Spring. Syria and Lybian meltdowns are on him + nato allies like France and UK.

So far Trump only took stupid foreign policy decisions, I'll support him if he makes a smart move, but that seems like an unlikely thing to happen in the forseable future, as he keeps taking the worse possible option every time.

Like pulling out troops when there is a void of proper national strength.
