Yanukovych is history. The Party of the Regions is gearing up for the May 25th election, even if the constitutional/legal nature of it all is questionable. Now Merkel, Putin and others seem to want to prop up Timochenko. Is this the right thing to do? Is she healthy enough? Is she too corrupt, too emotional, too vengeful to rise to the challenge? I'm skeptical. There must be other, better options for a president who can unify the country.

Dear Lord, if 2,000 is an armed invasion what is 1 million? If I had a military base in the Ukraine this is about the time I would send a few extra thousand to make sure mobs don't go burning my sensitive espionage equipment to the ground, could cost tens of millions to replace.

Oh please, as if Europe will do anything. Central Europe's main natural gas supply comes from Russia and it's the middle of winter, you think they wanna piss Russia off?

And really, I think there are more than a few Europeans who see Ukraine and Belarus as the western-most provinces of Russia anyhow >.>

Not to mention that Obama can barely pay the police and firemen in his country, he's not gonna start a war with Putin and Putin knows it. If he decides to invade Ukraine there will be a lot of of outcry, but other than "Bad Putin, shame on you for picking on poor little Ukraine" there won't be much else. No one in the EU will sanction Russia, they can't afford to.

Sometimes there could be other things more important than economic interests. It seems to be a question of time until Ukraine will declare war on Russia. The russian parlament just allowed russian invasion on Krim.

We will see if Russia get's a "free pass" for this by european countries or not. I don't hope it for the sake of every other or future neighbours of Russia with russian minorities...

Russia declares an interest in protecting Russian minorities in East Germany, Germany joins the Russian Federation saying "the last war showed we're better off cooperating with our eastern neighbors".

In other news, unconfirmed sources claim Russia and Germany have cut a deal to split Poland in the following years into "economic spheres of influence", the general consensus in Poland is "who cares, at least we'll have warm water and electricity and it's better than being owned by China".

Lots of talk by the EU and US. Neither have the military power to back up their demands. Nuclear missiles don't count as they'd be much too excessive.

Putin is very motivated to get at least some kind of victory out of Ukraine. Otherwise he'd be seen as weak at home, and obsolete as president. The Russians would themselves start demanding more liberties.

Maybe he's content with getting Krim back, or at least more autonomy for it.
