Qi, what classifies as a British surname? And also, the fact it was just their surname implies that they are not British themselves?

gg, I know there is a French one, think someone made and American one, read all the threads for the past half a year to a year, skimming the titles, and you might see it.

Hedja, my grandfathers both have surnames found in England between 1066 and 1850. The one is (a) a simplified version of a Scandinavian surname (ie, simplified by removing the -son, -sen) originating where Danelaw was; (b) originally a Scottish surname (minus the Mc- or Mac-) but the family moved into northeast England and was Anglicized between 1200 and 1600 (1600 being the farthest back I could trace the name with birth and death certificates); or (c) a simple English surname based on a first name. The other is either (a) a simple English surname based on a post-Norman invasion French first name or (b) an Anglicized French surname based on the name of an area in France. But by the 1700s and 1800s, both were common English surnames.

Grey, define "non-British." Is a recent immigrant who doesn't understand much about the English language, culture or history more "British" than someone whose family left in the mid-1800s? Are you looking for a political definition? Or a familial, cultural, or linguistic definition? If the former, Ironheart is "British" and I am not. If the latter, I am more "British" than Ironheart.

I don't really care about any of this. I just thought it'd be fun to play games with people who know how to write the English language properly (excluding Ironheart the Post-modernist Brit).

Haha, Yes, what kind of stupid question is that?

Am I the only one who is uncomfortable with the phrase "more British"?

Qi, anyone can change their surnames to make it British, that doesn't make them technically British, also there are surnames from other countries which are the same. Anyone who lives in the country, though they may be from a different country like Awesomeguy, currently are residing in the UK and therefore are allowed to be in the British League.

Also would you mind saying those 2 surnames, or only talk about how they originated from old Britain?

Additionally, you didn't answer my question. Are your grandfathers from Britain, or only have British surnames?

Dead, the phrase was "more 'British'" and not "more British." It is a subtle reference to how they first said

"the requirments are to either be British or have any relation to Britain"

I established "any relation to Britain" and was questioned.

Qi just join if you want, I can't be bothered to take this argument any further. We need more competition and players anyway.

Seeing that my "Britishness" is now acceptable, I think I'll instead opt for a splendid isolationist approach. The fun of joining was tarnished by the hassle of trying to join. Cheers.

So after arguing about why you should be able to join you have decided that you don't want to?
Did you always have the intention of not joining or did you only realise that wish now?

I originally planned to join, play, chat and have fun. Chatting was the main reason I wanted to join. But the chat is not especially enjoyable here and the rules for joining were set, changed and then ripped up. Not fun.

An alternative history: In ancient times the Macedonians wanted to participate in the Olympics. It was asked: Do they have Greek blood? Do they speak Greek? Do they believe in the Greek Pantheon? Do they have Greek customs? The Macedonians thought they did. So they sent a delegation. When the delegation arrived they were asked to show their passports and asked "but just how Greek are your grandfathers?" Meanwhile, the Persians living in Greece who might only speak or write broken Greek and whose familial customs differed were allowed to participate, without any questions asked. Feeling insulted, the Macedonians went home.

Dead piggy this isn't racism. But anyway I don't think the requirements for joining should be too stringent since it would be hard to prove any claims either way.
