I'd be willing to help someone with strat 1v1. I'm far from the best but I can teach the basics. It would also be nice for me to learn some of the finer points if anyone is interested in helping me out.

@MysteryMan and Blortis: Awesome. I've updated the thread.

If I have time later this evening, I'll set up a 1v1 game vs. me. It'll be multi-day, so there won't be any rush to make moves.

Strategic 2v2 is also a good idea

I heavily advise against that, bad templates will enforce some bad habits. Strat 1v1 (reduce luck to 0%)+ europe 3v3 is my recommendation. Also there are dozens of hours of old wargaminglive events on twitch, we have done a lot of analysis during 90+ weeks and almost 200 events.

As far as analysis goes, external perspective is always a good idea, but you always have to focus more on your own analysis. If your analysis is objective and you focus on eliminating your mistakes, you will see progress quickly.

Thanks for the advice, sze! If I read your message correctly, you're implying that strategic 2v2 is among the bad templates that enforce bad habits? Pardon me if this is an idiotic question. I always thought that strategic 2v2 was close enough to strat. 1v1 that many rules of expansion and starting picks were similar enough that playing strat. 2v2 with a person new to Warlight would be beneficial to them--teaching not only the intricacies of Medium Earth but also good teamwork.

Yes Kasperov. I think you need different tiers. Like people who can help someone with beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, and the particular template.

I can help with intermediate on Europe 3v3.

Teamplay and 1v1 play have some common ground, however on an idea level they differ quite a lot. Strat 2v2 has many disadvantages as a template, the biggest one being only 2 starts per player. That increases the number rock-paper-scissors scenarios dramatically during the picking stage and most high level team games have a much stronger emphasis on map control/map balance. Strat 2v2 is a far cry from both its 1v1 sister and most competetive 2v2 templates. For team games 3v3 games have proven to be most balanced, that is why I suggested Europe 3v3, but any more balanced no-cards template would be beneficial to anyone who wants to understand teamplay.

I currently have a tutor but I am all for hearing a second persons opinion. ChrisCMU, would you mind helping me? I would prefer a 1v1 template :P

If you truly wish to learn more, you have to
A)Humble yourself
B)Put time and effort into finding your mistakes, and work on not making the same ones in the future.
C)Bring in outside ideas and learn new "tricks" and moves. Watch games between high level players and ask high level players for advice.

I can use myself as an example on A. Last winter, I believed I was a good 3v3 Europe player. I didn't learn much when I thought that. Then Gnuffone kicked my ass a couple times, and I realized how much I actually had to learn. To become very good, I first had to admit to myself that I wasn't good currently, and that I would listen fully to advice from players that were better than me. For some, this is easy. For me, it was not, but I'm glad I did it.

Like Sze says, eliminate your own mistakes. I found that even when I was a worse player, I could spot a vast majority of my own mistakes.

If you have done #1 and #2 and you still lose games and you aren't sure why, ask! If you are playing a very good player, pm them asking what your mistakes were. If you are often losing to guys that are not good, and you aren't sure why, make a game with one of the mentors on this thread or someone else you think might help you who is very good. They can help point out mistakes for you and make you a better player.

Kasparov, will you be mentoring yourself? How can I trust you to train me when you cannot train yourself!

Hah, Jefferspin! I will be mentoring others, and accepting lessons as well. Who said I can't use my own creation? ;)

Edit: You're better than I am at the moment, anyway, so we shall see who shall be teaching whom!
