Best WL n.1 players?: 8/8/2013 14:57:57

Hi ladd(er)s,

Recently I wrote on the second Nations Cup thread:
"Its official. The appeal and the fame of the Nations Cup contributed to the come back of one of the WL legends - Zaeban. As far as I know, he is rusty and out of shape, and was reluctant to come back, but eventually he decided to help the friends lacking a player in the team.
So some of you who wanna measure with one of the best WL players or who yearn for a long-time denied revenge soon will have a chance."

I searched the forum for the best WL players or legends and I didn't find an answer to the following question: who are the players who have spent most CONSECUTIVE weeks as n.1 on the 1vs1 Ladder?
As far as I follow the WL there were Impaler and Zaeban, then I saw a guy named Unknownsoldier for some time.
Fizzer do you have statistics on this? Who and for how long was n.1 without interruptions? You guys know any other WL legends in these terms?

Ladder #1 doesnt mean you are the best
some people choose not to play the ladder, like me.

I'm the best player on WL.

Period.

Someone did an analysis once on who held the top spot the longest. I cannot seem to find that thread though. Besides, it was made when Niko was #1 (I think), so it's not been updated in a while.

The Impaller held the top spot almost uninterrupted for over a year. Afterwards Zaeban, than Gui had long streaks. Followed by unknownsoldier.
Perhaps Szeweningen has the longest streak after that, but I'm not so sure. I lost track quickly after I quit the ladder myself.

Now for another question: how many #1s have there been in total now? The list should be a lot longer now with half of Apex added.

Didn't the Impaller play with slightly different Strategic 1v1 settings?

Also, after 2 or 3 years, I believe other players (Sze, Gui, among others) would have improved and played enough to challenge the Impaller (and beat her, even if she carried on playing and didn't quit for a long time).

Fridge yeah, The Impaller was the most famous female player (not you Aranka, go away :P).

I've heard both male and female for The Impaler, and also that he pretended to be a girl once as a joke. The pink color probably lends itself to the confusion.

As for best ever, The Impaler may have been that once, and helped invent most of the techniques that are currently the keys to winning, but he's no the best by a long shot. Too many people learned what he figured out and improved on other parts of the game. The last time he tried the ladder, he made it into the 1800s before giving up.

The Impaller held the top spot for only about 5 months straight(including a week vacation in the middle).

He had the longest streak of any player in the game at #1 but when he came back from retirement, he reached about 2,000 and was in 4th place, but couldn't get to the top again.

impaller = guy. how do i know? i talked with him a bit about the game and about rejoining the ladder at the same time when we did. i was hoping we could have a game or so on the ladder, but he quit before i got ranked. then i quit once i lost the top spot.

there is a double psychological effect of getting a high rating atop the ladder. once you get to #1, you feel like you accomplished your goal. and if your rating is stable for a while at 2150+, you have trouble accepting anything less than 2100, since one loss drops you 50+.

...and for impaller, i think the psychological effect was similar. he was so used to being #1 that when he returned and lost a few games (rusty? better competition?), i think he felt that he lost the top spot in a different way and just decided to quit.

Tim, the Impaller was a very good all round player. Warlight skills are pretty transferrable.

Impaller is the best ever because he held the top spot for longer than anyone else. He held the top spot against top quality players like Teddy and Blue Precision and Bostonfred.
Newer players seem to doubt the quality of players that used to play the game but then conveniently forget how long HHH has been around or Blue Precision. Maybe Teddy coming back to land straight in at no.1 will make them reconsider.

i agree. impaller could easily come back and get to #1. he'd have to knock some rust off. but it wouldnt take more than 20 games. i dont think he did that last time.

I on the other hand don't think he could do it that easily. He might be able to take #1 but holding it and dominating like he did? I doubt it. Too much competition nowadays. And if he was a very good all-around player, why did he never take first on the 2v2 ladder? If he is taht good at 1v1, he should have taken first on 2v2 too since ladder 2v2 is similar to 1v1, granted there are differences. I am sure Teddy and Heyheuhei and Blue Precision have slightly improved over the period of a year and a half since they have all played games since then. The Impaller has not grown in his gameplay at all and while I think he would be a very good player, I can't see him being able to dominate. But that's just my theory, there's no way to prove it or disprove it without him coming back.

I agree with JSA. I think the competition now is a lot stronger than during the Impaller's reign of terror. Teddy returning after so long is also very interesting. That is a real achievement IMO, and with practice I expect Teddy to be capable of holding 1 for a very long time, possibly becoming one of the best all time greats.
