Round Robin Tie Breaker: 1/8/2015 21:36:11

Just finished a round robin tournament. Three teams finished with a single loss, A beat B, B beat C, and C beat A. The only thread I can find that questions how the tie is broken is a couple of years old & ends with someone speculating that it is essentially a (three way) coin flip to resolve the tie. That seems really weak - after battling through a tournament for months, to have it settled arbitrarily is not very fulfilling. I'm hoping that there is some other explanation - does anyone know if there is another mechanism. BTW - it's not sour grapes - we won - I just don't know why.
Thanks!

There are ways to mathematically determine a winner out of tied scores. It usually involves determining the skill of the teams that the tied teams defeated, and then deciding whose wins were worth more. This feature is not implemented in Warlight's tournament generator, which is one of the reasons I use outside sources to help host important tournaments.

Could you link the tournament?

how you plan to resolve that tie with all having only a single loss?

Edit: never mind. It's still tied.

Round Robins frustrate me. This doesn't happen as often in Swiss tournaments.

If it were up to me, I would have such an outcome trigger a rematch between the three teams who are tied at the top. Each of the three teams plays the other two again, and hope that one team rises to the top. I guess it would be hard to code that into the tournament though... alternately just declare all three winner.

I'm sorry and I know this is off topic, but, Hennns, how come you profile is missing most of the standard fields, like the common games link, etc.?

You didn't scroll down did you? :p (my bio was a bunch of blank lines, however they're gone now; after you posted that comment, I didn't change it (Fizzer?))

Hmm, I would think win% of people beaten is most fair.

But Timi is right, with 1 loss it could not work. You could analyze something within the games, but I think that is unfair because your only task is to win.

Couldn't the system give all tied teams the same place? So if you have 3 teams 5-1, only losses to the 5-1 teams...they are all "1st Place".

If I remember correctly, I think that when there is an unbreakable tournament tie, it checks the average turn length and gives the win to whoever has the fastest turns. I don't know how that works with teams though. Maybe it averages the turn length of the team members.

Again, I'm not completely certain, but that's what I seem to remember.

I would much rather it not break unbreakable ties (from HTH). Why does the system have to have all places not be tied? I get all games must have a winner in the API, but tournaments seem different. Why can't it have?:

1st place
1st place
3rd place
4th place
...
