OR you are saying gg because you are about to surrender but want to try a little longer.

Also: it's only insulting to say "GG" if you're predicting they'll come anything but 1st in CL7 :D

I have sometimes wanted to say to my opponent gg to denote in a tight and exciting game that it is indeed a good game, no matter the end result. I think however this is usually mis-interpreted and I most likely require a different way to express that in short hand.

Write "Good game" instead.

This inspires defiance in the other player and will have the reverse effect of making them less likely to surrender.

Well, that really doesn't matter when they will never surrender in the first place.

If you can't be bothered to take some quick turns in a game you have in the bag, well, frankly that's your problem.

Bro, if you can't be bothered to click on a nice little button titled "Surrender" when you know I have a game in the bag, then you are turning your problem into my problem, and that's irking.

I usually wait until the other player says gg if they appear to be at a disadvantage, I usually assume they will carry on until they are eliminated at that point except on very big maps, where I usually expect them to surrender.

Yes I do, I blacklisted them.

Example. I was about to commit and they booted when I said wait and I had let me play beyond the boot time, so he wasn't even a fast player.

asshole says gg after booting me on as soon as the timer goes red.

See, here's the problem: It's very subjective as to when you're "guaranteed to win". You can make educated guesses about the other guy's strength, but with fog, you can't know for certain what the other player has up their sleeve. A player who happens to be losing at the moment should be able to play the game out a few more turns without getting flak for it.

I usually wait to say gg until an opponent surrenders unless the game is well fought by both sides, then I say it as an acknowledgment of the skill. But in those cases I make mention of the enjoyment of the game.

If Im losing and my opponent says gg before I surrender I take it as being arrogant. I may be losing but I like to give it a few turns to be safe. No point surrendering if my chances if success are still relavent to some degree.

But if my opponent says gg as in it was a well fought game then I will usually return the gesture.

I suppose saying gg depends on context and delivery.

I'm not talking about taking guesses, I'm talking about a player who literally has no chance of winning, waiting until the last minute to take his turn. Saying "gg" to people like this is saying too much. They should be thankful I acknowledge their skill, instead of saying "give up, you stalling ass."

wow, I would never guess so many people would be insulted/annoyed/pissed by someone saying "gg"... now I know why some people never give up even when the game is completely/clearly/unquestionable finished!!!

what can I say?!
SORRY all, my mistake! please believe me, it wasn't intentional...

I usually take gg before the game ends to mean the opponent is about to surrender, and after the game to mean a compliment of my skill or the general enjoyment of the game.

If you say gg and then don't surrender I generally feel that means they are saying they are enjoying and appreciating the game.

If I've been chatting with a player and they say gg whilst I'm being crushed I never take that as an insult, it's always hard to say when a player isn't talkative though, I often just assume their English is poor.

If you're saying gg because you expect me to surrender then you're just being a jerk, and the problem is your end... If you don't have time to finish the game then don't play :P

That's a good example, I think sometimes crafty players who are losing try and use "gg?" to try and goad their opponent into surrendering, or put you off by making you think they have a stronger position than they do. I've seen this happen a lot to me especially when I was low level, I even surrendered a couple of times until I cottoned on to it...

It's gamesmanship and metagaming...

To me 'gg' is a reflection on the game. Typically I either say it after the game as general courtesy, or when I think I've lost (and I think back to the random game recently where I said it and then It turned out I won anyway...). I think you're asking the wrong question, whether it is insulting or not, but the question should be when/why can it be insulting? Telling your opponent to quit the game - that would cut deep especially in fog as mentioned above. I personally like to know that I was a respected opponent, even if I lost. I think we as payers should simply ignore the insulting people, maybe blacklist them, but definitely keep in mind that for every uncourteous player there is a multitude of respectful ones.

Definitions of words are derived from the way they are generally understood. If we choose to define 'gg' as offensive, so it will be, and we won't be able to be changed back. If I remember right, 'gay' used to mean 'happy'. And now look at what happened to it. The offense is in your head. Choose to not be offended, and it will not be. Be offended, and it will be. The choice is up to you as an individual, and for the sake of the Warlight community I hope you choose wisely.
