But they would also be cheap, someone would buy them... then they could play full power and jump back up again.

We've got someone doing that in the 1v1 ladder right now...
https://www.warlight.net/Forum/136648-shame

Even if it wasn't obvious or intentional, it'll happen to some degree anyway. But maybe that's part of the fun? Who knows...

Banning players doing it will just get messy though, I'm just saying, maybe players being able to control their prices could cause problems...

There has been an update to the economy to ensure every player can contribute towards their club's earnings. This has also resulted in a slight decrease in the flat base income.(I've also updated the first post with these changes.)

Income
  • A club gets income for every game it participates in, based on the following system:
    - 1v1 : Winner - 3 Nohhams, Loser - 0.5 Nohhams
    - 2v2 : Winner - 4 Nohhams, Loser - 1 Nohhams
    - 3v3 : Winner - 5 Nohhams, Loser - 1.5 Nohhams
  • Total income from games in season 1: 375 Nohhams(from wins) + 82.5 Nohhams(from losses) = 457.5 Nohhams.
  • Max income per club from games in season 1: 125 Nohhams
  • Every club is also given a flat income of 30 Nohhams at the end of each season( to cover operational costs for the upcoming season).

The losing team only gets the income if ALL players on that team complete the game and avoid any boots. This update aims to promote reliability in the league, and even losing teams can bring in some income for clubs!

What is a player Fixes a game?

If someone is throwing games, I will consider permanently banning them from this league. If there is match fixing where both parties are involved, then all of the players' points in the current season are halved as well.

Basically, cheating of any sort will incur harsh penalties.

Fleece, have you ever heard of 'regression to the mean'?

I'll explain, Wayne Rooney was one of the best strikers in the BPL, Manchester United won just about every season for over 5 years with him, now MU has regressed to the mean, as Rooney is losing his stamina through age. It's like a golden age in Sid Meier's Civilization, they are brief, but glorious times.

Of course the reverse can happen as well, like with some players that get worse briefly then regress to the mean.

As a scientist, I don't believe regression to the mean exists, it's part of the gamblers fallacy (trust me, I've tested this to see if it's exloitable in real life)

In a random walk system it's actually more common for the value to move away from it's starting value, ie the mean keeps changing. Well, I say more common, I should say just as likely...

I think you might be mixing up your metaphors here, what you're refering to is a boom-bust cycle:

Most games try and avoid this because it is usually deemed as unfun/unfair to lose any money you have made, most games follow an exponential growth curve instead (ever played cookie-clicker? :P)

In my games I instead try and use this to increse the player involvement, but even then, it's not easy. In life the rich always get richer, but mostly because they are smart enough to get that money in the first place, by exploiting this cycle (I made most of my money during the bank recession in 2008, because I invested after their stock price collapsed, it's easy to make money out if a system like this, because unless something collapses, it usually will recover)

Also in the Wayne Rooney case you're talking about player "form" but also the general bell curve of ability an athlete exibhits over time. There's other factors as to why ManU are playing poorly, it's not just to do with Rooney. It's also that other clubs have more money at the moment (like Chelsea, but even they are dwindling)

Plus, this is why boom-bust will always be prefered over a smooth and stable economy, because that's how those in power, and with money make more money. It's bad for us, good for them. There are ways to fix out economy, but those who can don't want to... :P

Yeah, Rooney was a pretty poor example, I'll take an extract from Ben Goldacre's Bad Science...

Oops, returned that book yesterday.

He mentioned something about the Sport Magazine curse, whereby anyone who appeared on a sport magazine (after a particularly good streak) would become worse again (a regression to the mean).

Although I'm not going to argue with a scientist, most likely older than me.

One thong came to my mind: It should be explicitly statet somewhere that people who signed up for 5 games are not allowed to play more. Because this is part of the calculated value of the player.

It says so on the sheet, snife :)

And tojam, that's probably to do with a lot of factors, such as confirmation bias. If a player is showcased, then supports will expect from from them, if he performs poorly it will be even more noticed, even if it's still within a players average. Also the play himself may feel more pressure if he reads about himself.

With a lot of these things it's always subjective too, how "good" a player plays in football is arbitary at best, other than stats there's not a lot to go on other than a "feeling" of how well they played. All of these are factors :)

Update:

We have begun the process of choosing 6 managers from the 12 candidates. I hope to complete this in a day. We're in the process of estimating base prices for all players in the pool as well.

We will also have a live stream after WGL today to talk about the Manager League!!
