I assume you're not talking about his reelection where he literally won 49/50 states, in which he did indeed "sweep the entire south", although he also "swept the entire north" and "swept the entire west". Rather, I'd assume you're talking about his first election. Here is the map from that election:

The list of states that nixon lost is actually pretty impressive for someone who "swept the complete south":

1. Texas
2. Arkansas
3. Alabama
4. Mississippi
5. Georgia
6. Louisiana

This means that the only meaningful victories he achieved in the south were virginia, tennessee, Florida, and North carolina, none of which had been particularly solid parts of the "solid south" before this (see elections like 1956, 1952, and 1928), and even remain somewhat swingy today (see elections like 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012).

I meant the after effects. Nixon won a historic second term victory only to be bested by Reagan in 84. Hoover tried the same thing and won the entire south in 1928 but he eventually realized that it had way too much baggage to cultivate properly at the time. If Hoover had kept up his southern strategy, he might have won against FDR. Nixons reelection plan was pretty genius, and it didn't hurt that he was running against the liberal version Goldwater. But after Watergate and the party almost fell apart, the southern republicans basically filled in the gap. Ford, to his credit, tried to stop it but after he lossed reelection....that kinda screwed the Republican party over. When Reagan was crowned, that was the end of moderate power in RNC leadership.
