Warlight QUIZ!: 1/3/2013 05:02:21

62% wow. Maybe I should have cheated =/

Predictably the ones I got wrong were:
the ones that dont use standard settings (so fuck those questions =P)

9. I assume it is E rather than D incase I was counterpicked in Africa? That is a cool idea but I would be happy to bet the outcome of the game that it isnt the case. I have never fallen prey to such a counter in all my thousand and something strat 1v1s I would much prefer to finish the bonus with my leftovers slightly closer to ant so they can help complete it. I would be interested to see the game that inspired this question. Who counterpicks like this?

10. The question is "how and where will you attack?" not "which of these letters describes your best options?" and I answered with how and where I would have attacked in a game. It was as good an answer as could have been given. In a game you get to pick one option. Noting another option is as good is a waste of time. I actually think A is the dominant strategy because it is more flexible. If your opponent moves into scand next turn you want to be able to finish SA and deploy to fight him (assumptions made by the question clearly could be wrong), not have a few armies patiently waiting in SA for the skirmish to be over so they can be used to complete CA.

12. No C&D are not equally good, assuming the enemy tried to take SA first either option is likely to be crushing because I will have a bonus and he wont. What if he isn't in SA? or doesnt take it first? Then completing antarctica first turn with highest likelihood is obviouly better.

I trust Sze will find my explanations of the failings of his (otherwise excellent) quiz accurate. I will award myself an honorary 100% and be on my way =D. I very much look forward to your next quiz.

P.S. what do you mean by 'net income'?

12. Read my response to John, obviously they are not "equally" good, but there is no objective way to find a dominant strategy between them... Precisely because the opponent might try to take SA and you'll have to counterattack.

10. Eh, next time I'll ask someone else to write it for me, since my wording might be off... I specifically said in the assumptions that you do not deploy in scandinavia and in the introduction I asked to find best answer... Maybe it was not necessary for me to try to "trick" people, but the point of this question was to a) raise awareness about preserving leftovers b) check if people can visualise more than one turn, and they will see that the follow-up in CA and SA is the same in both strategies, I think I won't use "trick" questions in the future.

9. SA and Antarctica for a completely safe pair of bonuses, so if you get both of them, you should suspect something fishy, definitely the biggest possible threat is north africa, since opponent leaving you SA and antarctica will very likely know you are there and, with that positioning, it gives him a lot of intel (he knows yuo'll start with SA). Because of that not taking Brasil should be considered a mistake.

Net income is the difference between armies killed and armies lost on specific attacks (7vs10 attack gives you 4-7=-3 net income for example)

You were also very prolific on the forum as Gui. I only remember reading that one "who are the best 10 (20?) players?" thread you created where you were called Yuanshuai. I'm part of the Kongregate/onemorelevel/etc. influx so I don't know about your forum presence from more than one and a half year ago. And I wouldn't have met the requirements for your games for a long time anyway. A lot of people that actually use the forums are like me.
Also, Gui is just easier to remember than Yuanshuai. Oh and if we count the Guillaumes as Guis then Gui is the name you carried the longest.

Hahaha, I love that he tried to ambush you, but you ambushed him, a turn earlier and so much more effectively. And I love his response...

I think you were right about question 9. I was being greedy. As for 12 there is a way to find a dominant strategy, its the one that is best if your opponent doesnt bother with SA (which isnt unreasonable. It is such a bad idea).

Who got the highest score?

Income is the wrong word. It means something very different. The quiz is interesting. It could be more useful if more questions were related to situations that happen in most games. Memorizing straight round attacks if you never play straight round (or don't even have a membership to create such games) doesn't seem to be part of basic mechanics. Knowing the exact probability of multiple simultaneous attacks isn't necessary to be a good player either. On such matters knowing your chances are not great is good enough. But maybe it is exciting for guys who like mathematical equations. Where else can one use math in ordinary daily life?
Altogether, I'd say only 7 of the 13 questions are worth knowing by heart.

I agree with piggy here. Its 4+4+3 equity vs 5+3+3 equity. 4+4+3 is superior unless you were a huge underdog entering the game.

also i think you lose .62 not .48

I got 77

I got 62%. Just a few question...

Q12: Why wouldn't you attack Novo with 3?

Q13: Does move order really matter, since none of your opponents possible territories border Antarctica?

Q12 as well as a few others I disagree with, so won't comment on that ;).

As for 13 it matters, couse it might hide the number of troops you were attacking with.

On the second question, you deploy 2 on Chad and 1 on DRC (or 0 on Chad and 3 on DRC). An attack with 1 kills 1. Then you can take the territory with 3v2, so you need less armies total.

I got 68%.
And I screwed up the first question somehow. I have no idea how that happened...

I don't get how people can get 68%, 56%, etc. because there are only 13 questions possible.

SCORES ( Possible )
1/13 = 8%
2/13 = 15%
3/13 = 23%
4/13 = 31%
5/13 = 38%
6/13 = 46%
7/13 = 54%
8/13 = 62%
9/13 = 69%
10/13 = 77%
11/13 = 85%
12/13 = 92%
13/13 = 100%

So unless another factor had come into play (time, question "bonuses" or any other variable) then these should be the exact scores.

szeweningen,
A few suggestions:
- For each answer, don't just say which one is correct, but explain why it is correct (or, if you think it is didactically better, at least give a hint).
- Include a short recap of Strategic 1 vs 1 settings (number of initial armies per territory mostly) as a convenience for those who don't know by heart.
- What does "negative net income" on Question 5 mean?
- I suggest photoshopping the "7" on Ghana (Question 8) into a "1", since it's irrelevant for the question but could be distracting (just like good chess puzzles never have any pieces which are irrelevant).

TAFKAG:
Why did you all decide on Gui? It's certainly not my real name and not one of the usernames I use define me in any non-virtual sense. Maybe this is hard for you to understand, Dick. I came to warlight assuming an incognito account was a tabula rosa to be shaped any which way I want. Dick, your persistent nastiness is true as the north star.

Because we had to decide on something. You see, for the most part people choose a name (whether their real name, a derivative of their real name or a moniker) and stick with it. In those cases almost everyone (there will of course be the occasional exception...) will simply use that name to refer to them. What that name is doesn't matter, because it's just an identifier, something to recognise people by. That is why your continuous name changes caused "everyone" to settle on something ("gui" in this case) and go with it.
When you came to WL your "WL personality" was indeed a "tabula rasa" to the other WL players; any reputation you might have on any other site (or in real life, for that matter) did not carry over. However, once you came here you started getting a reputation, a way people know you. And you can't just reset that by changing your name. Changing your name and (simultaneously) your behaviour might do the trick, if you want it to.
Complaining about any nastiness you perceive in Richard seems a little strange, as you yourself are (in my opinion) by no means the most amicable person on these forums either.

I checked my usernames.

Maybe it's just me, but if even you yourself have to check the log of your previous usernames... how on Earth do you expect everyone else to keep track?

And, in case anyone wonders: http://www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/quizreport.php?title=warlight-skillknowledge-evaluation-test&sid=30244915 (yes, I messed up Q8... :X)
