American culture is so oppressive and controlling that something as anti-authoritarian as charlie hebdo couldnt exist there.

This just isn't true. You can find political satire anywhere here. Even stuff that is harshly critical of others. The mainstream stuff that might wash up on your shores might be bland and unfunny, but it's still deeply critical.

Edit: also I'd like to say that Charlie Hebdo's Mohammed cartoons were kind of lazy trolling. Not thought-provoking. Not very conscientious or revolutionary. Reminds me of South Park.

There is nothing in america that doesnt take the desires of the state into consideration at all. Edgy political american just break rules, Charlie acts like there are none. They were a bunch of outcast nerds who did their own thing without paying any attention to how they were recieved, thats an aspirational kind of freedom. American satirists who are deeply critical are not free, theyve just been given a bigger cage.

Piggy your argument simply is untrue. While comparing the freedom of two cultures is technically a subjective thing to do, it is difficult to argue that the sexist, over-centralized governments of the Middle East are more oppressive than the U.S.

Also, slammy, I love your comment on the laziness of U.S. culture attacks. I have been looking for a good way to say that for a while. It is so easy in this day and age to jump on the American-hate bandwagon, and the arguments that those types of people have tend to be vague and with only a pinch of heavily-biased facts to back them up. It is upsetting when people, especially clearly educated people like yourself, piggy, waste their efforts on making the easy, spineless arguments in a debate.

if somebody feels like checking, i'm curious how many people in this thread was pro-torture. i think it was just 2 (skourby and eclipse?), but maybe i miscounted.

Torture is torture. What we should truly be worried about is the reasons why torture is being used.

At least the US Americans agree again on how injust the worlds perception is towards the United States.

That perception is so absurd, that it could have been written by Kafka.

The US System is so sophisticated in making you sheeple, that you have almost no chance of escaping it unless you would, under great effort, be willing do so. By overcoming that same laziness you claim to see in others and trying to get yourself true information outside your propaganda industry.

This system resembles a train, that runs on one track straight into the abyss. That train is controled by a minority of 1% which live luxuriously in 40% of the train. The next 9% have accomodated themselves in 80% of it. What is left of the train is crowded by the people that like to call themselves americans. They fight over the standing places, black against white against hispanic against republican against democrat against pro this anti that. This servant population works and works hard to feed them and their family, to just get along, which gets harder and harder by every mile the train runs. They are given the illusion that they might one day join the others in the more luxurious parts of the train if they just work hard enough. Now 10% percent of people on the train have been become useless to the train society and are kept in shackles inside the train.
While the train is running the people in back wagons of the train are constantly bombarded with propaganda. They are being told how big and beautiful their train is. How other people have to walk, or ride in bad trains, or in trains that run only half as fast. So they are all honoured to ride biggest and bestest train of the world. They are told that through every place that the train runs, they are dropping care packages to the local populaces, while in reality the 1% exploits those places and its populations, to fuel the train with the much needed coal to run on.
Every 4 miles the train runs, the people in the back of the train can switch out the train operator. For this, the train society has created two parties. The one party is pushing the train to its limits, while the other says lets drive only half as fast as we could. The course of the train can not be changed, since its running on one track.
Our train people occasionally peek out of the train. They scratch small peekholes in the shadowed windows and what they see confuses them. It doesnt add up to everything they got constantly told on the train and they somehow feel that something isnt right, even though they cant make out for sure what it is. Some are embarressed, some are scared, but eventually they all return back in the craddle of the train community, even though they feel less and less convinced when they cheer the chant on the greatness of their train.
Confused, dazzled and scared our trainpopulation will eventually reach the abyss. If they can halt the train before they do, is uncertain. But if they happen to fall down that crack, they will do it while still chanting the greatness of their train.

All trains fall off their tracks.

Hah, I like how all the memes here are politically orientated here. But American propoganda IS real. No country is without propoganda, except maybe well-off and powerless countries, like Iceland. Or in the extremely poor and powerless countries, like Sierra Leone or Liberia.

I will admit that you can see that there is some propaganda in the media ; it's obvious more than half of the networks are usually in Obama's favor or are TEA Party Republican-style. Satirical news is the only crap you can really deal with that isn't force-feeding you lies and fibs. Maybe I should try to find out who has a rifle in my complex, and then maybe we can rally a local militia. That'd be cool.

It's not internal, which medium supports which party, it's simply supporting that everything the US does is right and for noble reason. There are some examples of brainwasheds here.

And satirical news, although not propaganda, is very biased.

I'll take biased over propaganda ; you're going to always get a bias. Besides, it takes real events and just novelizes them. Rarely do I see it bend the actual truth ( though they don't often do so, because they distort what people say ).

Well, at the end of the day, propaganda is simply a bias mixed in with why you should believe this bias/psychological elements to make you believe the bias.
