Europe 1066 AD

Unlocks at level 21 or with the Mega Maps Pack
Created by Moros (all)

Average rating: 4.076 / 5
956 territories, 300 bonuses, 2 distribution modes

Description

This map is almost completely fictional. It's based on the game Crusader Kings I, and the various kingdoms, empires, sultanate and tribes shown there were never existing at the same time. I only named the map 1066 AD because:
A: It is the year you start in in the original game.
B: It's to emphasize it's similarities with Europe 1648 AD.

The boats make this map unique and more realistic.

This is a great map that realistically accounts for sea travel and is fairly balanced based on the couple of single player games I have tried, although I have yet to play a multiplayer game on it. Super-bonuses accurately reflect the difficulty to acquire the requisite lands and aren't too massive.

Now for the one (major) downfall. AIs are stupid and the map setup makes it difficult to get a good game out of them (I had to create custom scenarios to place them in the middle of a landmass) because for some reason the AIs have a water fetish and will expand exclusively on water if possible. Because the oceanic territories grant no extra reinforcements, the AI will remain at 5 income as they stick to the ocean and avoid land for the entire game. I don't know what could remedy the AI's fixation, but I recommend that bonuses be created for the marine properties to at least give the pirate AIs some income.

Other than that, it's a nice map. A 5 if the AI problem is fixed, but for (pun intentional) now a 4.
Response by map creator Moros on 2/27/2013
I have no idea how to fix that problem. In the original game, the seas actually cost money to get your troops across them, so making them into bonuses wouldn't make sense.
I considered making bonuses for the viking, arab and european ships, but those would be very big and not worth completing.
And from what I know, AI's will always try to complete bonuses, so it might consider the seas all part of a bonus of 0 territories, making them the top on the list of things to complete.
One thing I could try though is to create an "invisible" bonus. One that covers all seas, has no bonuslink and is worth no armies. Maybe the AI will then consider it a useless bonus and start on the smaller ones first. But I'm not sure, this will have to be tested.
EDIT: I will be making bonuses for seas, but they will be rather large, to avoid people starting in them.

This Map is awesome! You should make maps for all the Paradox Games, would allow us a Mega Campaign, lol.
Response by map creator Moros on 2/18/2013
Haha. I'm afraid I own only CKDV, so I don't know any other good Paradox game to make a map of.

Great map, but so enormous, it takes ages to expand

This is so amazing! It's such a big an awesome map and so accurate too!

I can't wait till i get promo account and have 23 other AI's playing with me. That'd be even more epic!
Response by map creator Moros on 2/22/2013
You can play against as many AI as you like in Single Player modus ;) But I advise you not to grant them too many starting spots, as it quickly gets chaotic. Have fun!

I've just played today against two players on this map. It's really exhousting to play with less than 5 players on this map, but I'm sure that it's very fun to play on it against many players. I like the idea that you need to possess sea if you want to get oversea territories. 5/5 and on favorites list

Excellent map, possibly the best of all I have played ! The addition of non-bonus, traversable sea zones is briliant, greatly adding to the tactical challenge. The bonuses are well adjusted, making "surprises" possible even in end-game. Congatulations !

Enjoyed this map, but naval routes can get confusing without lines showing which are connected. Overall a good play.
Response by map creator Moros on 2/26/2013
The seas are divided into squares, and each square contains one ship. Wherever the squares border, so do the ships in them. Adding more lines would make the map too cluttered, in the Mediterranean especially.

excelent, the water territories makes a different type of strategy that makes the game more intresting because generates a diferent type of fronteer that gives the power to conquer easyer far away countries but you have to get the navy dominance to make it possible, its a very good option to play

Good map, lots of bonuses, eastern superbonuses are a bit too big to get.

Thanks, it will be fixed.

This is a really good map, but a bit boring to play against the AI. The ships give a welcome extra. Probably much more a map for several real players or teams.

Longest game I have played to date, but the pay off at the end was amazing. Don't play this map expecting an easy or short game. The abundance of ships add a unique edge. Took me about 6 tries to win, but like I said, worth it in the end. :)

I'm on a boat,I'm on a boat, Everybody look at me 'Cause I'm sailing on a boat
5 stars!
I love the map,for it requires the player to dominate the sea in a sense, and adding bonuses to the ships make it dangerous to pick a start near the sea/ocean
Plus I just like historical maps PERIOD.

Incredibly detailed, and as far as I can tell, no missing links. It is also very nicely balanced, and the ships are both detailed, and very helpful tactically. Only thing I could possibly think would make it better would be if ships had bonuses (Like capturing all those in the Atlantic or all the longships)

Review by Tarhani on 1/11/2016.
Nice concept: The ships do not represent single routes, they represent zones of control. So every sea area is connected to all adjacent areas, sea areas similar to land areas.

8 player settings:
- Spain is a bit strong, they have a fast uncomplicated start, a secure corner of the map and higher bonus-to-land-ratio in the beginning.
- France loses. Their large superbonus comes late and is hard to defend against three stronger neighbours.

Review by MaxK on 5/30/2013.
Excellent map. However, could the creator perhaps make an alternate map where the oceans have no bonuses (like before) or even negative bonuses to make players weigh the cost/benefits of crossing water?

Also, I think it would be interesting to have a version with higher bonus values geared more towards expansion-style gameplay.
Response by map creator Moros on 12/9/2014
I'm possibly updating the map to have the naval bonuses as 0. If you think you know a good template with other bonus values, please send me the link.

A good map for early time, before more precise maps could be made, a rare find. To make it a Role playing game, where you can define your own kingdoms boundaries, set Kingdom Bonuses to 0 so you dont abide those.Good map

Adding capture-able water territories creates an added complexity to the game-play. Blockading is now accomplish-able; bringing a more realistic game-play to the users. I'd like to see more of these. 5/5 Would play again.

Map is pretty cool, though the ships and bonuses are scattered all over (there's a bonus called "ignore this"...) and you can't tell where the ships connect to. There are several land territories that appear to be connected, but actually aren't. All in all though, still a nice map with a decent variety of bonuses.
