It would be extremely interesting to see how each seasonal ladder's ratings correlate with those of the 1v1 ladder.

Then we could meaningfully quantify the "strategickeryness" of this season's template.

To do this for a given season, consider all the players that had a 1v1 ladder rating at the end of the season. Calculate a correlation coefficient, r, to measure dependence between the players' seasonal and 1v1 ladder ratings.

Repeat for all seasons. A hypothetical season amounting to a 50-50 lottery should have r close to 0. A season with exact 1v1 ladder settings should have r close to 1. The actual seasons will have r between 0 and 1.

Mike, I don't really see why this particular game shows that the template is based on luck.

Warlight frequently involves risk vs reward decisions. If the decision involves the commander, there can be "existential" risks.

The games posted so far in this thread have something in common: the player with the strongest position needlessly took on existential risk (maybe they didn't even recognize it), and then the worst case happened!

Majority opinion (especially among prior ladder leaders) seems against commander templates, but maybe this is because everyone is still adjusting to existential risk management.

Legitimate luck based settings such as WR and 16% is "risk management" and nobody bats an eye

Throwing your commander in the enemy's deathstack is "pure luck" and everyone loses their minds

I don't really like the template (freakin' local deployments... specially on MME; could use a different map), but commanders are pretty fun to play with. There's always a strong comeback potential that doesn't involve stalling and praying for a boot. At least there's a point to play past the fifth turn that isn't "both players tripled on opposite sides of the map".

If you looked carefully, you would have been able to find out the turn order on turn 2. If you took that punt and still kept an eye on the turn order, you would have known that your opponent had 1st move on turn 4. How do I know from turn 2? I recognise that turn order pattern from many 1v1 cyclic games.

Good some players are able to see a strategical masterpiece behind this template. Love it

The problem people have is not with commanders. The problem is no army left behind.

Well, yeah. That's a pretty lazy thing; I assume fizzer wanted to make it possible to have 0 armies + the commander in a territory but saw no way that didn't include tons of coding or just adding the no army left behind option. On the plus side, at least it's not no-split. :p

I think the rating system is broke, my rating is 1000 higher than what I'd expect it to be.
